Is 'Bob Crowe' any relation to Bob Crow, the former RMT leader?

On dates, i think Labour would have liked to leave Copeland till May, but need to hold Stoke ASAP to suppress any UKIP surge I think you are over thinking this andrew. If you go early people accuse you of trying to stop your opponents building up a head of steam and if you delay for as long as possible you are accused of hoping your opponents will run out of steam....Once Reed had announced he was going it had to be as soon as possible really. Well, the reasoning would be that holding the by-election on local election day the Tories and Lib Dems would be distracted by County Council elections, and Labour strength on the ground would weigh more heavily. Reed said he was resigning at the end of January, so that seems to have been rushed forward (possibly always the intention?) Stoke is an obvious one to hold ASAP..

Speaking on the topic of other Labour MPs similar in broad views ... Rest of this waste of space deleted. If you're going to engage in pathetic mischief-making in another party, don't make it obvious that's what you're doing.

Rachel Reeves will be around for a while, I suspect. I imagine I'm not the only one who rates her significantly higher than the morons than Corbyn and McDonnell have found to shore up their shadow cabinet.

I have always said that I think it likEly that there will be MPS who don't stand at the next election. However I think that standing down beforehand would require the existence of an alternative occupation. Ummuna will probably be hoping that he stands a chance of leadership if the party shifts rightwards and they decide on a snake oil salesman. The others are probably yesterday's people.

Be under no illusion, the main reason the Labour Party looks incompetent is that talent is positively correlated with an inability to work under a Corbyn/McDonnell leadership.

Lest face it half the party is on strike or go slow, though would be good tactics to give a bit on both sides on the run up to a by election

More a case of McDonnell laying down the line that if we lose both, Jeremy's not resigning... After all, the amendment to get McDonnell onto the ballot paper hasnt been passed yet.

Let's be blunt about it shall we - Reeves is one of those with a superb CV on paper who has never been able to live up to it in practice.
That goes for a few of our supposed "golden generation", in fact.

She has never been in a proper position to do so (Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary under Ed Miliband is not really enough). She would be among the top one for Chancellor/Shadow Chancellor if there was a decent leader but obviously not under Corbyn who prefers a bloke who hangs out with people who will tell you paying taxes is illegal because the UK has an army.
Incidentally Jamie Reed is now Steward of the Manor of Northstead.

It would certainly be a relief to have an actual economist as shadow chancellor. Or even chancellor.

Well I voted for Burnham in 2015, and it is widely believed he would have made Reeves his SC.
(by way of contrast, Cooper was strongly rumoured to have picked the hideously maladroit Chris Leslie - a major reason not to vote for her if true)

Be under no illusion, the main reason the Labour Party looks incompetent is that talent is positively correlated with an inability to work under a Corbyn/McDonnell leadership. The Labour Party looks incompetent because it isn't ruthless enough, because it thinks constantly with its heart not its head, because it sees activity as a substitute for achievement, because it prefers to manage problems rather than solve them. In short, the Labour Party currently looks incompetent because it is.
