"Truly horrendous" possibly overstates things a little. This, for Labour, has always been the more marginal of the two Gravesend divisions and both seats were lost in 2009. Even so, it is scarcely any thing other than very disappointing. It is not just a reflection on Labour's current self destructive tendency but underlines a problem for Labour in Kent, that has been transparent since 2010. There has been a long term move away from Labour in Kent since the 50s when Dover, Faversham, Rochester & Chatham. Gravesend and Dartford were all usually Labour and Gillingham and Thanet could come under pressure. In 2015 Gravesend and Canterbury bucked the trend and last night must be a bit of a warning as it suggests Conservative recovery there. Indeed. Same in Essex. But given the social attitudes there it isn't altogether surprising

Gillingham and Thanet didn't come under any pressure in the 50s - not even much in the 60s. Not until 1997 in fact (though Gillingham had been Labour in 1945 that was obviously a bit of an aberrant election - Thanet wasn't close even then)

Gravesend East shouldn't be regarded as that much of a surprise. I tried to add up the results in the May 2016 elections in the wards that make up the county electoral division, and though there wasn't a perfect candidature pattern, it looked pretty close then. That was before the recent shenanigans and new PM, and a double digit Conservative national lead. I nearly predicted a C gain, but unlike Pete didn't have the guts ...

But given the social attitudes there it isn't altogether surprising I don't think social attitudes have much to do with it. They aren't significantly different now (relative to the rest of the country) from what they were when we were competitive, nor are they more right-wing than in areas that are reliably Labour. The key factors are economic (a decline in skilled and semi-skilled unionised labour and a rise in middle-class commuting and low-skilled small business employment) and relating to a lack of identification with Labour (which in no small part stems from the first change.)

Can anyone help? I have in the last few minutes deleted my final analysis of the 9 by-elections held on Thursday. Does anyone know whether these can be reinstated automatically.
