Another recent example was the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in 2008; the Green candidate came second with 7.4% of the vote. The all-time record is East Kerry in 1885, where the Conservative came second with 1.0% of the vote - 30 votes to the winner's 3,069. A promising first post. Welcome on board. I recognise your username.

A promising first post. Welcome on board. I recognise your username. Thank you, I recognise your username from another forum, too - not sure whether there are norms here about naming it! I don't post very much in the other place these days; discussion is somewhat restricted I think. I defected to this place. Then suddenly, one day, I ended up as the Administrator. Post ten times here and you get to create your own threads.

Yes, very little going on over there, and no moderation, so am glad to set up an account and find lots of interesting threads here. Many thanks for the welcome!

My lowest was for a Stockport MDC by-election for Hazel Grove (Norbury/Torkington) Ward in 1976. It was a very low turnout and I was caught in a two party squeeze. I think I got around 250 votes (or was it 175?). When I stood in Northenden ward on Manchester, I got 546 votes, which was 9.2% (and a 1% increase in the vote) When I stood in Oliver's Battery & Badger Farm on Winchester, I got 489, which was 29%!

Here's one to challenge the forum's collective mind. Quite a difficult one given that people stand under various names.
But who holds the record for the most failed attempts to be elected to Parliament?
And even tougher, who holds the record for the most failed attempts to be elected to a proper council? (I.e. county, metropolitan, unitary or district)

It'd be interesting to know who has had the most failed runs for the larger parties too. I imagine there are UKIP candidates who have stood at every general and some by-elections, maybe even the odd Green?

I am sure there are others who can beat that.

I make it 41 contests for Sutch (7 general election candidacies and 34 by-elections). Boaks was well behind, 17 by-elections and a handful of general elections; Tom Keen of the Campaign for a More Prosperous Britain is also notable, (22 general election candidacies and 5 by-elections).
Farage must hold the UKIP record, seven attempts at election. For the Greens and predecessors, maybe Clive Lord, also seven runs?

A related question would be who had the most unsuccessful attempts before eventually being successfully elected?

For local elections, I think the record is John Peck of the CPGB, who apparently ran once in Scunthorpe, then 39 times in Bulwell/Bulwell East in Nottingham - he was finally elected on the 36th occasion, then defected to the Greens and won three more elections for them.

And for general elections, it may be Frank Smith, who stood in ten elections (for the Liberal, then the ILP and later the Labour Party) before winning Nuneaton in 1929.
Among current MPs, Alasdair McDonnell who stood seven times before winning election - in Belfast South, he came fourth a couple of times, but gradually increased his vote and finally won in 2005.

I am sure there are others who can beat that. David Bearfield has contested 25 elections since 1985 as a Labour candidate in Bushey (which has not elected any Labour councillors in my lifetime) - usually in the old Heath South ward and then in Bushey Heath and in the Bushey Heath/Bushey South CC division, but occasionally in other wards. His persistence paid off with one voters at least. On his last outing in 2015 my 78 year old lifelong Tory voting father voted for him - the first time he had ever voted for a Labour candidate and possibly for any non-Tory candidate

But who holds the record for the most failed attempts to be elected to Parliament? This is cheating by looking abroad, but... John Turmel has made 74 unsuccessful attempts to be elected to either the Parliament of Ontario or the Canadian House of Commons, mostly at by-elections.

Any relation to Nicole Turmel? Probably not, and if he ever found out he were distantly related to her, he'd do well to keep it quiet!
