Top 10 British expat destinations A little surprising to me that South Africa is so high up. Nowhere in the Middle East either.

Top 10 British expat destinations A little surprising to me that South Africa is so high up. Nowhere in the Middle East either. Loads of ex-pats in and around Cape Town when i was there albeit that was 30 years ago. I'm more surprised about Ireland actually which per capita must be higher than anywhere (except perhaps New Zealand and some tiny places which don't feature). I assume this is largely down to British nationals of Irish origin returning to their 'roots' as its not the sort of place you would imagine retiring to as you would to eg. Spain.

Quite a few Brits emigrated to South Africa in the postwar years, it maybe only eased off in the 1980s but still happens a bit today.
Portugal can't be far off making the top 10, I would have thought.

People without passports in England and Wales, mapped Would be interesting to see that plotted against the EU referendum vote. Looks like a big overlap between no passport and leave.

Well there's probably some overlap between OAPs and no passport, which would partly explain those retirement areas areas having lower numbers of holders.

Yes, but the main halfing was not - as many might think - between Soc.dem.s&Nat.lib.s&Progressives vs. Right, but between the outsiderish "Reich-enemies" (Soc.dem.s&Centre) and the "Cartell" representing the cons.-lib. establishment (Cons.&FreeCons.&Nat.lib.&Progressives).

Does this mean we will see some shock gains for the Tories in Hackney and Tower Hamlets!

Those areas in orange in my neck of the woods in the north east were shitholes 25 years ago.

Quite a few Brits emigrated to South Africa in the postwar years, it maybe only eased off in the 1980s but still happens a bit today. Portugal can't be far off making the top 10, I would have thought. Yes, the former Dominions have a very high "legacy" passport rate. As The Bishop says, there are not only those who migrated post-war, but depending on the basis of the stats also their children who inherited British citizenship by descent. I also personally know of a not insignificant number of Aussies and Kiwis (plus a few from SA) who moved to London in their early 20s, got British passports and then decided to return home in their thirties when their children (who also have British passports) were little. I would imagine the number of UK passport holders in the former Dominions will decline over the coming decades given not only UK born migrants entering (very) old age, but their children not being able to transmit British nationality down another generation, unless the kids were born in the UK. Of course, post-Brexit things will get a little more interesting. I know of plenty of EU migrants who never thought of naturalising pre-Brexit, but now have British passports. They certainly don't intend to stay here forever (plans subject to change, of course, as many a West Indian or sub-continental migrant has found over the years).

Those areas in orange in my neck of the woods in the north east were shitholes 25 years ago. I don't disagree - but they are definitely getting worse. Both in terms of state of the towns themselves but also things like antisocial behaviour (people shouting abuse in the street, loud bangs and explosions in back alleys). It is interesting though that the purple areas are (generally) the more pleasant and affluent parts of the region - there are exceptions, particularly in Northumberland, but by and large they are boroughs which feel a bit less neglected. Darlington is a good example - the town centre always feels a bit more lively and enjoyable to visit than others in the region.

Easy to forget ALBA has two MPs
Only a matter of time before 1 more MP does something crazy/disgusting/illegal, gets the whip removed and then the "Independents" will jump ahead of the Lib Dems into 4th place!!
(says a lot about the current crop of MPs...from all parties!)
