Ah so the 1087 map shows everywhere south of the Ribble as part of Cheshire. That would certainly make more sense that calling it Lancashire. It was recorded as Inter Ripam et Mersam at the end of the Cheshire section of the Domesday Book.

1992 Notionals - Census method of calculation vs Local government election results calculation:- Thank you to afleitch for providing Danny Dorling's figures (Con 351 v Lab 265 as opposed to Con 343 v Lab 273). The algorithm for the census calculations produced an oddity or two. Despite the colouring on the map many calculations differed little.
