How is historic Cardiganshire different to current Ceredigion? Two small areas of land on the other side of the Teifi estuary are in the historic Cardigan (though only from 1832) but not the current Ceredigion.

I seem to have forgotten to post these here: Wards in the historical counties of Cardiganshire, Flintshire and Glamorgan: I presume that these are the results of the last elections in 2017 (with the only difference being that St. Dogmael's being added, despite being in modern day Pembrokeshire)?

Actually that is not the historic county of Glamorgan -as the original boundary was the River Rhymney - with St Mellons, Rumney and Llanrumney etc plus the eastern half of the upper Rhymney Valley all being originally in Monmouthshire - and hence claimed by England for years.

I remember being on a train coming back to Cardiff, and there was a man a few seats down loudly explaining that he lived in England, Cardiff, Old St Mellons to be accurate. That he worked for the Welsh Conservative group in the National Assembly (as it then was) and that they were the most effective group there, further while the Welsh made fairly good solders (providing they had a white man commanding them) that they were useless at everything else and were clearly too stupid, week, poor and small for any realistic sort of self government...... you could feel the tension rising in the carriage. I hope he was trying to just get a rise out of people, though his travelling companions seemed to be agreeing with him.

while the Welsh made fairly good solders (providing they had a white man commanding them) that they were useless at everything else Funny, in the late middle ages, the peak of the use of Welsh troops in English contests, it was assumed they made very good soldiers provided they had a Welshman with connections to the old princely houses commanding them.

Whenever I see/hear the word Havering, I automatically think of a time when I was doing job interviews and an interviewee was early and was pacing up and down nervously outside the room. A colleague came in and said "just to let you know that there is someone havering outside the door". Puzzled, I asked him what he meant and it turns out he sort of amalgamated the words "hovering and wavering". I've always thought therefore that "to haver" should be a verb in english meaning to wait nervously or indecisively on the exterior or a place/location"

My feeling too as soon as I saw this post, and it does seem to have some Scottish derivation not entirely unrelated to oats, but manchesterman has a point that the word does seem to tie very well with hovering and wavering, all 3 words being about indecision, so all 3 could be used almost interchangeably. What a wonderful thing is the English language. And how singularly appropriate a name for the London Borough.
