A hundred Russian speakers at GCHQ might be useful though And yet provision for Russian in this country has gone down every year since the Wall fell. But never fear, we will win our geopolitical struggles with increased A* levels at GCSE!

carlton43 appears to be turning into a characature of himself! Very worrying! Poor evening. I think the nature of the thread and the attitude of the OP caused a malfunction in this Russophile who loathes Clinton, and that informed everything I did in a swirl of adrenalin but not of whiskey dear friends. I have made some deletions but I cannot and would not unsay the tenor of my posts in which I still believe. That period of collapse of the USSR could have been so productive and inclusive and positive , but we of the West referred buffering and containment to inclusion and support. That was an overhang of American Cold War payback, and so deeply disappointing. Since then we have reviled and provoked Russia at every turn and we are still doing it over the Olympics now. Any means to have a go and to prod the bear is warmly embraced. It is unedifying and deeply unwise. The ill-drawn cartoon has been rubbed out by the artist! I'm somewhat of a Russophile myself, and I initially thought Putin was a good thing- but I'm not convinced that an objection to Putin is a repudation of Russian. We should have been more willing to help when the Soviet Union collapsed. That and we should have been a bit better at understanding that Russia has a different culture to almost everywhere else and a special sense of destiny and uniqueness.

I have only just spotted this thread since I am not really participating in this forum at the moment. It is not surprising that Trump as a "Bonapartist" should see Putin as a kindred spririt. Let us remember that Putin is elected in a non-fixed election (although of course the media is controlled). Trump's general strategy bears considerable simularity. Also there is a geopolitical element, in that the focus is on China as the adversary (let's forget about Mexico), and there is at least an arguable case for a rabid nationalist that a Russian alliance against China makes sense.....
I do wonder if one of the motives for making Boris Buffoon foreign secretary is that he can establish relations with Trump should he be elected. The USA is even worse than the UK for shafting ordinary workers (income hasn't only declined since 2008, but since the 1990s), and nativist solutions have always appealed to the losers, however much they are counterproductive nonsense. The buffoon can always be replaced if Clinton wins, as by then May will be firmly in control.

That would be a very useful marker of new intent in a general rapprochement with that world power and a signal that the major powers would align their interests in mutual support and to combat the real world problems of which Islam is prime.
