Of the 1997 casualties, Peter Fry beat the 1970 intake by a year because he won a by-election in Wellingborough in 1969. ...and Sir Dudley Smith was elected to Warwick and Leamington the year before that before losing in '97. True. I think I forgot him the last time we discussed this!

Henry Compton won the New Forest by-election on 6th Dec 1905 with a majority of 199, the day after Arthur Balfour resigned as Prime Minister. A general election was held in January 1906 when he lost the seat to the Liberals by 48 votes. If that's largely from memory you should be awarded some kind of crown as a prize. Or maybe a staff. Or a link referring you to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_Kingdom_MPs_with_the_shortest_service

Two from overseas for comparison purposes: Jack Brooks (D-TX) defeated after 42 years in 1994, Earle Page (Country Party, NSW) defeated after 42 years (less a couple of days) in 1961 although he was literally in a coma at the time and never found out that he'd lost. Also Rep Emmanuel Cellar (D-NY) who served two months shy of 50 years in the House of Representatives. He lost the Democratic primary in 1972 and while he didn't campaign he was on the general election ballot as the Liberal Party candidate. Very remiss of me to forget Manny Celler; or rather that he was still on the ballot post primary loss.

David Winnick lost his seat this year after first being elected in 1966 and serving continuously since 1979. He was the only remaining MP who had sat in the 1960s.

Oh, here's one: Arthur Lewis (West Ham Upton 1945-50, West Ham North 1950-74, Newham North West 1974-83). Deselected in 1983 and stood as an independent (and lost, obviously). 38 years (less a month). I lived in Newham North-West for a year in the late 70s. It seemed to be a bit of a tradition for all the ward branches in the constituency to meet on the same night. Arthur rolled up at the Park ward branch meeting rather late in the evening, claiming he had visited all the others "but was saving the best till last." I have absolutely no idea what he said, such was the impression he made. A few years later, when safely back in Harrow, it didn't surprise me in the least to learn of his deselection.

Also worth mentioning Enoch Powell, 24 years as a Conservative in Wolverhampton, then after a short break, 13 years for the UUP in South Down before he lost the seat to the SDLP.

I always enjoy reading Andrew Roth's evocative descriptions of Lewis - in the MPs Chart he is described as a 'champ Cockney nagger', 'loud jealous underdog' and 'thick-skinned hog-caller'!

Total length of service: 42 years on behalf of Labour. Sir Dudley Smith still holds the record on the Conservatives' behalf (total length of service: 36 years).

A few interesting defeats in France the other week. A lot appear to have been in place since 1988.
Ain- Michel Voisin (LR), after serving since 1988. Lost to La REM. Alpes-Maritimes- Rudy Salles (UDI), also 1988, also to La REM. Bouches-du-Rhone- Christian Kert (LR), also 1988, also to La REM. Calvados- Nicole Ameline (LR), also 1988, also to La REM. Eure- Francois Loncle (PS), first elected in 1981, lost in 1993, re-elected in 1997. Finistere- Glibert Le Bris (PS)- on and off since 1981. Loire- Francois Rochebloine (NC)- since 1988, and brilliantly he is currently banned from entering Azerbaijan. Meuse- Jean-Louis Dumont (PS)- originally elected under PR in 1986. Nord- Yves Durand (PS)- also elected under PR originally, but in 1988.

One more from abroad: in last month's general election in The Bahamas, former Prime Minister Perry Christie lost his seat by 4 votes. He'd represented it for 40 years.

I would treat any source of a person's height as suspect unless you have had the measure out yourself. As an example Wikipedia gives Spike Lee as 1.68m (or 5'6"). I have seen him and he is under five feet tall. Similarly Clooney is listed at 5'8" and is 5'6" at most.
