Does anyone know which defeated MP holds the record for: * The longest overall service until their defeat? * The longest service in an individual constituency (give or take boundary reviews) until defeated? I just turned up Sir John Pakington, a regular Cabinet Minister under Derby, defeated at Droitwich in 1874 after thirty-seven years there. Any advances?

Malcolm Macmillan did 35 years in Western Isles for Labour from 1935 till 1970 when defeated by Donald Stewart of the SNP.
He apparently contacted Transport House when he was a 22 year old student at Aberdeen University to enquire if he could help in the 1935 campaign in his home constituency. He was told that there was no candidate in the Western Isles but if he could get himself nominated, the Party would endorse him.
In February 1974 he stood as a United Labour Party candidate and collected 6.8% of the vote.

Less than 37 years though not by much and a well known name so worth mentioning; Leo Amery (Birmingham South 1911-18, Sparkbrook 1918-45).

Oh, here's one: Arthur Lewis (West Ham Upton 1945-50, West Ham North 1950-74, Newham North West 1974-83). Deselected in 1983 and stood as an independent (and lost, obviously). 38 years (less a month).

Two from overseas for comparison purposes: Jack Brooks (D-TX) defeated after 42 years in 1994, Earle Page (Country Party, NSW) defeated after 42 years (less a couple of days) in 1961 although he was literally in a coma at the time and never found out that he'd lost.

Embarrassingly I live in his constituency on all boundaries (I think - I've seen different accounts of where the Stratford/Upton boundary ran). I'd forgotten he ran as an indy. There was quite a sequence of non-re-selections - Lewis got the West Ham North seat over Henry Nicholls, the Stratford MP (it was a classic case of fusing two seats and the two MPs went head to head). Nicholls in turn had replaced Thomas Groves in 1945 when the latter was deselected and stood as an independent.

In the unlikely event he doesn't stand down at the next election, David Winnick may well lose his seat.

What about the shortest serving MP to be defeated? Ossie O'Brien of Darlington in 1983?

Looks like the boundary went from Three Mills along the 2 railway lines to Bakers-Abbey-Church-Vicarage-Water and then along the railway to Manor Park.

Henry Compton won the New Forest by-election on 6th Dec 1905 with a majority of 199, the day after Arthur Balfour resigned as Prime Minister. A general election was held in January 1906 when he lost the seat to the Liberals by 48 votes.

Thanks - the map on Wikipedia suggests similar but the E7 Then and Now blog has implied all of Forest Gate was in the Stratford division. However the pre 2002 Forest Gate ward was entirely north of the railway line and maybe the same arrangement applied on West Ham BC?

Longest Serving before a defeat, I know that on Election Night 1997 they mentioned Marcus Fox in Shipley (27 years) as to the shortest that would have to be seats that were gained at both February and October 1974 general elections surely

He lost the Democratic primary in 1972 and while he didn't campaign he was on the general election ballot as the Liberal Party candidate.
