It is said that Mark Clarke won the Farringdon Within ward byelection (for which polling closed at 8 PM, not the usual 10 PM for other local authorities). Epic fail there David, it wasn't even close? Is this the beginning of real politics breaking out in the City or just a blip?

Looking forward to the stoke result should be Labour but with such a ballot paper cant rule out a shock I'm guessing: BNP 5.5% Democratic Nationalist 2% Not sure of boundaries and which part of stoke i have canvassed in the area years ago but big patriotic vote then. Is this a highly non white area BNP/Natdem vote predictions very low so suspect so or has stoke even turned its back

Is this the beginning of real politics breaking out in the City or just a blip? I was expecting the City establishment to turn out, being the employees of the older firms. They didn't, and the vote must have been dominated by residents who would be more likely to respond to Clarke's pitch. The term is a short one because full council elections will happen next March, with much greater publicity. We'll see what happens then.

Rumours the City Independents have won in Stoke. Boom not a good one for Labour if true although such a spread on the ballot paper may have hurt them, then again nothing simple or understandable in stoke local politics

Might we see the business vote start to wane now with all the shenanigans that have gone on? Turnout was just terrible, plenty of scope for improvement (and I suppose, relative normality to resume next year).

So WTF happened in Stoke?? Surely 'WTF' isn't warranted in this case. Stoke is Stoke!

It might be interesting to know, in the light of this result, what the previous ward(s) in this division were and how they voted.......... I think the whole of this ward was within the Stoke & Trent Vale ward which was Labour in 2010, Independent in 2008, LD in 2007 and 2006, Liberal in 2004 (!) Like I said its Stoke. Its not only the city of Stoke - its the Stoke ward of the city of Stoke

I'm not sure if the Liberal reported in my T&R for 2004 is correct. Almost all the Stoke wards have 'Liberal' candidates rather than LD (at least those that have one or the other) with only one having a LD candidate. It may be they were LDs, or perhaps there was some kind of schism at that time in the local LDs, of the kind which is not totally unheard of in Stoke

As is Ellesmere Port.

Andrews site has it as LD so i'll take that - seems more plausible. So actually 2010 was the first time Labour won the ward on those boundaries

Lubinski stood unsuccessfully for re-election in 2008 as a Lib Dem.

It seems to cover a similar area to the previous ward (before 2002) of Stoke West which Labour last won in 1996
