That line up in Stoke - just like the good old days ;D Absolutely right! This vacancy has attracted every malcontent and bitter and twisted has-been group in the City it seems. The City Independents are still a group (and main opposition on the Council), but have no record of success here. The Lib Dems used to command a substantial vote in the old larger, Trent Vale ward, but it has tailed off somewhat, though might still prove a threat if labour don't keep an eye on the ball. The Democratic Nationalist (!?) was formerly a BNP councillor in Longton and now seems to be in a right-wing wilderness. The Independent is in a left-wing wilderness, having previously been in the Labour Party and having fallen out with it over their replacement for the Stoke Central seat who has turned out to be a huge success locally. Should be a Labour hold.

Hmmm, does Gary Elsby still spend most of his time trolling on blogs??

I don't know much about small right-wing groups of course. The Bradford group could well have contacted him and got him to join them. If he is now using Democratic Nationalist as an actual Party description, then presumably they have authorised this.
Poor Gary Elsby! He seems to spend much of his time fretting and fuming on a variety of blogs. I don't bother reading them anymore, the line never changes. I think he'll struggle here too, it's not his part of the City.

Who were the "Community Voice" group that stood in 2011? Are they linked to any of the candidates this time round?

Who were the "Community Voice" group that stood in 2011? Are they linked to any of the candidates this time round? The Community Voice candidate was Jackie Barnes, now standing for the City Independents. The Sentinel reports:

Who were the "Community Voice" group that stood in 2011? Are they linked to any of the candidates this time round? They were an amalgam of other Parties' rejects in 2009/10. They were mostly from the Labour Party. A couple were expelled, but most of them left. They thought that the Labour Party was too pro-Elected Mayor, which I always thought was a bit unfair, since they were only taking account of the 2002 referendum result which introduced it. And to be fair to the then elected Mayor Mark Meredith, he did what he promised and called another referendum in 2008 (when he could probably have avoided one, in the Council chamber at least) and the position was voted out of existence. After the 2008 referendum, many of the Community Voice people seem to have lost their energy without a 'cause celebre' to rally around. There were one or two tories in the group and ex-BNP which was quite a motley crew when you consider that most of the ex-Labour people considered themselves 'left-wing'. Anyway, it didn't get off the ground really as most people saw it for the unholy alliance it was. I think at least two of the candidates in this by-election would have previously been associated with Community Voice. They must be very frustrated at their inability to contest Council seats each year, since Stoke-on-Trent has now moved to all-out four yearly elections.

Democratic Nationalists stood outside Bradford for the first time in May. They stood a candidate in Doncaster polling 410 votes (16.6%) and another somewhere in Pendle. They are affiliated with the Andrew Brons 'reform' faction within the BNP. Andrews website called for all nationalists who support reforming the leadership of BNP to stand as Democratic Nationalists. There is still an ongoing faction war, however Andrew supposedly in August is forming a new party. The BNP will be down to only 1 MEP then... i would presume if this happens that the DN's will cease to exist and form a large base of the new party.

What has caused this sudden rash of resignations of Conservative councillors in Breckland? Or are they all unconnected?

One councillor moving out the area, one ill health resignation and one because husband is involved in a project which could cause a conflict of interest.

One more that has been missed up until now:
CITY OF LONDON - Farringdon Within (Non-party resigned)[/u]
2009 [8 seats] - No desc 277, 272, 256, 252, 219, 198; Ind 229, 228, 177; Lab 81
Trevor James BRIGNALL (Independent) Mark Adrian CLARKE (No description) Spencer MARSHALL (Independent) Bryn David PHILLIPS (No description)
Caused by the resignation of Robert Hughes-Penney, who was the candidate with No description who obtained 219 votes in 2009.

I think that should be included in the prediction competition.
Gwynedd? Pah, easy!

I think that should be included in the prediction competition. Gwynedd? Pah, easy! I think precedent is (in places like Shetland) where no party candidate is standing the election is excluded from the competition

I'm wary of telling you who'll win and who the other candidates are if it's going to be part of the competition.
