She was in Coronation Street for three years - 1994 to 1997. She's currently appearing in adverts for 'over 50's life insurance'. She is a Batley lass by birth.

To think the Conservatives could have put up Bill Roache or Sue Nicholls. Christopher Biggins is still available I believe.

When exactly can we expect the SOPN to be available? Nominations close on 27th September at 4pm, so hopefully c.5pm on Tuesday. We'll see how prompt Kirklees Council is. I'm intending to add a new thread poll asking who we would vote for in this most unusual by-election. Should be quite interesting.

What will be most interesting is if you can tell us how many Labour supporters have voted and how many supporters of other parties since we can take it as read that Labour supporters will vote for the Labour candidate but it will be interesting to see how non-Labour supporters break

I read something recently, I can't remember who by, which laid into these schemes, saying they were poor value for money. Also, I can't see why anyone without dependants needs life insurance at all.

Surely any one over 50 will have a pension pot to pass on should they die before retirement?

To think the Conservatives could have put up Bill Roache or Sue Nicholls. And Bill Roach isn't in the slightest bit boring. Or so a court has decreed (I think)!

Agreed but, as an actress, I'm sure she is glad to get her fee!

Sweepstake on how many candidates there will be when nominations close tomorrow? I'm going for 11.

I was afraid it might turn into a circus like Haltemprice & Howden was, with lots of self-important candidates each thinking that they are the only main opposition to Labour, but hopefully Witney will have distracted some of those away from Batley.

Sweepstake on how many candidates there will be when nominations close tomorrow? I'm going for 11. I'll say 7. I can envisage Lab, Eng Dems, Liberty GB, and a few independents. I would be surprised if there are many more due to the tragic circumstances of this by-election. On the other hand there will be some degree of annoyance that the more major parties aren't allowing democracy to take its course in the usual way, which I daresay Jo Cox would have wanted.

The race for second place is of great interest, because none of us have a clue. Any ideas? Maybe make a poll on this.

I'd be very surprised if you were right. Right about what Jo Cox would have wanted or about the number of candidates? As Jo Cox is dead, there's absolutely no way of knowing what she would or would not have wanted.
