And it would make ZERO difference to 99% of the population in the constituency. The same could be said for most, if not all, constituencies. Yes it could. It is easy to obsess and overdo the imperative nature of individual representation as an everyday necessity. It is the bedrock of our defence against overt or hidden tyranny, but most of the time it matters hardly a whit to any constituent at all.

According to Paul Routledge (today's Huddersfield Examiner) Tracy Brabin (soap star) is tipped to be the Labour candidate.

More accurately, a "soap star" about 20 years ago Still, if this report is accurate she has at least one big thing going for her - not being David Miliband

I remember Tracy Brabin as Tricia in Corrie (my mum had it on the TV almost without fail). She got sacked from the factory by Mike Baldwin.

Blimey, that's hagiographical even by the standards of local media.

Since when is the constitutional matter of holding a by-election in the gift of one family for Woden's sake. It is an absolute disgrace that Labour gets a free run at this and all the major parties deserve a slapped face for bloody silliness.

That's odd if true. Where did Laura Kuenssberg get that information from? She might have been watching Daily Politics on BBC2.

It is an absolute disgrace that Labour gets a free run at this and all the major parties deserve a slapped face for bloody silliness. Two issues here... Out of courtesy Labour probably wanted to wait until after the summer for the by-election and out of politeness mentioned the date to her widow - I doubt anyone went to Mr Cox and said "please pick a date" As for the date of 20th - by elections have historically been lumped together and I'd be amazed if there hadn't been a chat between the whips to get this and Witney on the same day. Should party whips basically control the timetable? No there should be a timetable with a bit of flexibility but ultimately called by the Speaker. Should Conservatives, LD, UKIP etc stand? Yes and looking at the poll in this thread most people agree with me.

What are the proposed boundary changes for this constituency? Whoever goes for the Labour candidacy will know they will probably be looking for a new seat within a couple of years.

Split between Spen, and Batley & Morley, the new MP should have no trouble being accomodated in one or the other.

Will Ed be voted off strictly in time to be the candidate? I guess if not he can be the candidate in Walton next year.

Balls isn't returning to parliament any time soon. If he does it will surely be at the coming GE.
