The Independents are well organised in St Ives: www.i4si.org/The successful candidate is a former school headteacher and presumably quite well known.

It really is very poor for the LibDems to manage only 26 votes in a by-election in a LibDem-held parliamentary constituency. ? St Ives Huntingdonshire is 350 miles by road from St Ives Cornwall.

? St Ives Huntingdonshire is 350 miles by road from St Ives Cornwall. Oh dear, schoolboy error! And I have actually been to St Ives in Huntingdonshire! Well Huntingdon was once represented in Parliament by Oliver Cromwell. I don't know if there is anything we can draw from that?

Some shocking Lib Dem votes this Week is it just poor areas or can more be read into it. Even if poor areas for the 3rd party of the UK these votes would worry me if i was a Lib Dem. Are we becoming a total 2 party nation?

What are you talking about? Of the three main by-elections they only contested one and in that contest fairly comfortably held a seat in a ward which Labour won this May.

A bit strange they couldn't find a candidate for the New Forest seat, though. Surely wouldn't have happened a few years ago......

A bit strange they couldn't find a candidate for the New Forest seat, though. Surely wouldn't have happened a few years ago...... Outside of Lymington itself we've always found it harder in the south and west of the New Forest (as opposed to the north and east) and even in Lymington in recent years it's been pretty tough going (with us only winning 1 seat in the town in 2007 and losing that last year). With 2011 being so dire in out heartland in the authority, fighting complete lost causes I suppose doesn't appeal (you are quite right it wouldn't have happened a few years ago) especially as it's a place where we're not exactly conceding ground to you by not standing (because you've got even less chance there than we have!). Still, even given all that it would have been nice to see a candidate there.

Ah yes, substituting 554 for 454. Maybe an email to the site might be in order??
