A ukip gain, a lib dem gain and a libdem hold on the cards. You're welcome to enter the prediction competition.

Odd than an MP resigned but did not wait two weeks to combine with the PCC elections. Presumably deliberate.

A ukip gain, a lib dem gain and a libdem hold on the cards. The first one should be an interesting sign of whether UKIP has stood the test of time in the Southwest where they did so well until last May..

Glad to see a full slate of Green candidates this time. Doesn't happen often. Some of those Menheniot names look familiar from the Bristol area. I assume Charles Boney is the same person who stood as the Lib Dem candidate in Bristol West constituency twice in the 1990s and was a local councillor in the area (Avon county I think and possibly in Northavon or Bristol City Council as well). And I assume Duncan Odgers is the same person who stood as UKIP candidate last year for Kingswood constituency.

He was a local teacher then. The current Boney is a vineyard owner in St Keyne and chair of SE Cornwall Lib Dems, but, I've seen pictures of both and they are the same person. Duncan Odgers was clear last time he ran in Kingswood, he lives in Cornwall (Looe), but stays in Bristol during the week due to work.

A ukip gain, a lib dem gain and a libdem hold on the cards. UKIP have pretty much crashed in Cornwall since 2013, so no gain here.

Mebyon Kernow's hollow claims to be the face of "growing" Cornish nationalism ring even hollower when they don't bother standing in elections...again.

A former boss of mine was the author of "The Tin Mining Men of Menheniot" (or something similar). A better read than it might sound.

If Halcon were in some parts of the country, it would be a safe Labour ward. It was Labour held from 1973 until 1995, but they have gradually disappeared here over the last 20 years and didn't stand in 2015.
The Conservatives won a seat in the ward for the first time ever last May
This is the 3rd by election in the ward in the last 4 years. I suspect it will be a Lib Dem hold.

Yes now you mention it, I remember Boney being Labour first and then defecting, and being a decent representative for his ward. On the subject of vineyards, at the time of John Major being prime minister (and him being married to Norma) there was one vineyard within the city of Bristol, which was run at the time by John and Norma Minors. I went on a couple of organised trips around it, and someone would always raise the coincidence in their names.

The local journalist for the Cornish Guardian, reporting from Wadebridge count, is saying turnout is high, perhaps 50% and than it's looking good for Liberal Democrats.

I had assumed that the more likely gain for the LDs was Menheniot!

Turnout is 48% in Wadebridge, the Cornish Guardian journalist is forecasting a LD gain.
