There will be four candidates for the Kenton East seat in Harrow, polling on 20 April: Annabel Charis Rebecca CROFT (Liberal Democrats) (Commonly known as Charis Croft) Herbert Winford CROSSMAN (UKIP) Nitesh Vishram HIRANI (Conservative Party) (Commonly known as Nitesh Hirani) Nishit PATEL (Labour Party) (Commonly known as Nish Patel) This will be the first time that Croft and Hirani have stood for election. A Google search suggests that Croft is chair of Harrow Liberal Democrats, setting the questions for the local Lib Dem quiz night last November. As for Hirani, It would appear from the various addresses appearing on the SOPN that he is the only candidate to live in Kenton East ward. A local blog suggests he is "a temple activist [and] member of the Conservative action team for Kenton East". The blog suggests that another member of the Conservative action team for the ward has mysteriously pulled out of the group. We are all by now familiar with Crossman, who was also the UKIP candidate in last month's Roxbourne by-election. Patel was one of the three Labour candidates for nearby Belmont ward in 2014; he is currently the chair of Harrow East Labour Party. Curiously, we have been told by Cheshire East that you cannot be "commonly known" by a name you carry. So Annabel Charis Rebecca could be "commonly known" as Becca or Ann or Char, but not as Annabel or Charis or Rebecca. Of course, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that CE could be talking ********.

This is untrue, as Returning Officers have shown at by-election declarations e.g. 'Ray, Marisha Priyanka known as Marisha and 'Kelly Jane Tolhurst, also known as Kelly Tolhurst...'

I'm not sure why all this "commonly known" stuff is being employed. I mean, my full name is Colin James Gray, but everyone knows me as Colin Gray. I would never feel the need to state the obviousness of this when a candidate. However, it might be different if I had dropped the use of Colin and everyone knew me as James.... and I can quite understand why Boris Johnson, for example, feels the need to drop parts of his full name for everyday use.
I think the biggest problem is for people, like myself, who want the fullest and most accurate details of election results, often for their own records. It used to be the case that full candidate names, plus the "commonly known as" rider, were both printed on Statements of Persons Nominated, Notices of Poll and ballot papers. These days it seems that the best place to find full candidate name details is on the Notices of Election Agents. For my records I also check (for candidates who are new to me) names against entries in the Register of Electors. Alternatively I resort to personal enquiries: in the recent Harrow by-election in Roxbourne ward I discovered, by asking Mr Henson, that winner Maxine Henson has a second forename (Margaret).
It would be interesting to know how Thrasher and Rallings deal with this problem in their recording of parliamentary election results: the use of abbreviated and slang names by candidates is becoming quite prevalent; the worst cases are to be found with MRLP candidates and the like.

There was a thread discussing it in the run-up to last year's council elections. I seem to recall that it was due to new guidance issued directly to councils by the Electoral Commission that is completely at odds with the documents on their website which state that the RO can't challenge a commonly used name.

The trial continues of Donal Hassett , Conservative councillor for Newbridge on Bath/NES UA . He is charged with renting properties using false names which were used as cannabis making factories . He has admitted renting 4 properties fraudulently but denied knowledge of the use they were put to . I think it is clear we can expect a by election in due course . This by-election has now been called for May 4th.
