I attended my new community council last night. Officious, entitled and ineffective The main issues are nimbyism and objecting to people under 18. A comedy moment was when the SNP councilor looked down vigorously at her laptop while the natives complained about free travel for young people allowing kids from other villages to come to their village and sit on the benches. I won't be back but I am getting a litter picker from them Would I be right in thinking that the community council is either majority or entirely non-party?

Can't anyone make a new start any more? Don't we believe in rehabilitation? Of course we do, and more so than the USA in legal terms at least. Local newspapers are getting desperate for news coverage. And for journalists, so they just work from party press releases.

Community councils in Scotland are consultative only, with no power to raise council tax or to provide local services.
This contrasts with parish councils in England and community councils in Wales, which do raise council tax and provide a limited range of local services, such as allotments, playgrounds, sports facilities and burial grounds. They also have a consultative role in terms of planning applications and other initiatives of the local councils.
Consequently there is much less interest in community councils in Scotland. By and large they are elected uncontested - and a significant proportion of councils cannot be established because of insufficient candidates and therefore remain in abeyance. The local authority usually provides a small grant to each active community council to cover their administrative costs. I am not aware of any party candidates contesting Scottish community councils, but one or two may have slipped through.

None of the SOPNs I've seen, even for contested elections, have even had spaces for descriptions - I assumed (albeit without trying to confimr) that this was universal and meant whatever legislation governs them forbade descriptions entirely.

I did sit on one however which had constituencies and elections. Then co-opted the losing candidates. One had the office bearers at a top table and everyone else in rows of seats, members of public or "community councilors" and anyone could speak if they raised their hand. Others have the "councilors" sitting around a boardroom table and "the public" sitting in viewing seats, not permitted to speak. I have known parish councils in England behave in each of those ways.

Beaconsfield West is apparently a LD win Looking at last year's results, this is a gain from the Tories. Melody Colette Brown was the outgoing councillor.

To expand on this slightly, the overall result for Beaconsfield Town Council last year was Con 13, Lib Dem 1, Ind 1, Ind Save Our Green Belt Campaigner 1. The Central Ward contest is also a Conservative defence and was unopposed last year.

Well they could give us the numbers! So the new composition of the council is Con 11 (-2), Lib Dem 3 (+2), Ind 1, Ind Save Our Green Belt Campaigner 1. Positive news for locals, a little opposition is always a good thing.
