As I suspected, the LD paperwork error helped the Liberals (it's hard to believe it didn't confuse at least 5 voters).

Rural areas do give high credence to the individual though and Ryedale has a Liberal tradition. I am not sure if this ward ever returned a Liberal but wasn't the winning candidate a farmer? Again not unusual for a farmer to be elected if he is well known locally

When was the last Liberal by-election gain? I can't remember one. Somewhat unexpected result...

Oh yes - because local people who care about their local areas and actually do something about them but refuse to join an establishment party really are just boring aren't they...

Congratulations to Mike, he and his team worked hard to win. He just missed winning back in May in Pickering.

The SDP candidate in the Richmond by-election in 1989 who I think came second to William Hague was called Mike Potter. Not the same person as the by-election winner in Ryedale surely? Discussed upthread - it seems they are not.

Political Betting were hinting at a Liberal win. I wish I was a gambler and had put a bet on it now.
