Surely a candidate named Newman is the only choice for a high-profile convert to Catholicism. And it leaves the PM in a bit of a pickle too! All of which could be good for our Garry?

Apparently, the Lib Dem Candidate Julian Newman has gone on holiday to Tenerife, his leaflet says commitment.....and he won't be at the count on Wednesday 23rd December. He also has a Postal Vote, and less than one hundred yards is the Polling Station, so at least he's making good use of his vote. Incredible story though, that you are on holiday! Total embarassment. The embarrassment is all UKIPs for calling an election in the Christmas holiday and in a seat where a well respected Conservative councillor had died.

I would have thought that being in Tenerife was a fair reason to use a postal vote. Only a complete lunatic would question that! The embarrassment is about holding a by-election on such a stupid date. Besides being away on holiday at the time didn't do any harm to Ruth Ellen Brouseau in Quebec in 2011.

Those with far better memories than I will know the details of this, but didn't UKIP try a similar trick - possibly somewhere in Norfolk - a couple of years ago, and got absolutely pasted for their troubles, dropping from a close second to almost wipeout?

AYLESBURY VALE Grendon Underwood and Brill Cameron Branston (Conservative) 326 Julian Alexander Newman (Liberal Democrats) 275 Gary Good (UK Independence Party) 148 Shock horror! UKIP trounced by 'absentee' Lib Democrat. Newman's 'Get the vote out' campaign, masterminded from his holiday retreat in Tenerife obviously caught UKIP by surprise. However, Cameron Branston does sound like the love child of David Cameron and Eric Pickles.

That's funny Labour did even put in a showing.....The Local Lib Dem Candidate was the only candidate that lived in the ward, he is very well know, that's why it's a 25% increase. He went on holiday on Saturday.

He went on holiday on Saturday. UKIP were overheard at the count saying they had expected to win. Perhaps this is why they called the election for 23rd December, trying to wrong foot other parties. If so it seems to have back fired. With a 20% share of the vote and a poor third place they seem to be on the wane.

I've got a Seinfeldian image of Branston greeting his opponent simply with a melodramatic "Hello...Nnnnnnewman".

On a largely unrelated note, my family has a tradition of Christmas breakfast being a large pork pie with pickle. I've yet to meet anybody else who does this (well, partner's father seems to have enthusiastically adopted it, but that doesn't really count), so I'm wondering where we got the custom from. My best guess is that it's a Black Country thing, but does anybody have a better idea?

It might have some Yorkshire origins; my paternal grandmother from Ripon, always used to start Christmas Day with pork pie and freshly made mustard. Fortunately my dad didn't continue the tradition!
