Interesting that UKIP have ignored the convention that in the event of the death of an elected representative, it is usually the defending Party calls the by-election.

That's a 'convention' which is generally unknown to many of us on many councils. The fact that any two electors in a ward can call a by-election means that whatever local parties want to do is essentially irrelevant.

I was party to calling a byelection following the death of a councillor (Labour) as long ago as 2008. He died late August/ early September. It became clear Labour was intending to leave it until May 2009 which we felt was unacceptable*. We called the election in late October. It was held on 3 December. Labour held the seat by 3 votes. * unacceptable might not be quite the right word, but you know what I mean.

Following the death of the Conservative District Councillor for Grendon&Brill in Buckinghamshire, UKIp have called the by-election for 23rd December. Note that the election is on a Wednesday. Had the election been held on Thursday as normal, then the count would have been on Christmas Eve and likely carried over into the early hours of Christmas Day. Not sure what UKIP's tactics were intended to achieve but they and Conservatives could only come up with candidates from outside the ward. The Lib Dem candidate lives in the ward in Brill High Street and was formerly Chair of the Aylesbury Town Council when he lived in Aylesbury.

In which case, I would not say you were acting in an unacceptable way - leaving a seat vacant for 8 to 9 months would, IMO, be unacceptable.

The funeral of the former Conservative District Councillor was 15 October so it would not be a particularly long time to delay the by-election until after Christmas.
Turnout will be restricted by the closeness to Christmas and the fact the election is on a Wednesday, which will catch some people out.
Of course Conservatives are known for having their postal vote well organised but perhaps UKIP called the election for 23 December because they thought many of these postal voters have switched to them.

Interestingly Tony and Cherie Blair live in the Grendon Underwood & Brill ward at Wotton House, bought for £4m in 2008. As there is no Labour candidate who will they vote for? We will be drawing straws about canvassing the house - they may set the dogs on us. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wotton_House

If it is I'll go tell the armed policemen just over the way in Connaught Square that they can knock off early.

The Blairs's Wotton House is not in London but Buckinghamshire.

Not sure if Wotton House is given as the Blair's main residence but it would make sense to so as to avoid capital gains tax. Interestingly, the Great Train Robbers hideaway, Leatherslade Farm, is also in the same ward and not far away from the Blairs. However, I'm surprised we are not standing here, which is disappointing.
