George Askew , Conservative councillor for Carnforth and Millhead ward of Lancaster BC has sadly died . He was only elected in a by election in November It's not been a good few months for Conservative politicians from that ward - first Christopher Leadbetter, the previous councillor who died in September, then Cecil Parkinson in January and now George Askew, apparently heavily involved in the Leave campaign. RIP to them all.

Absolutely tragic - there are a few of us on here who knew George. He was a thoroughly decent guy. It's very sad.

Utterly tragic.
Any more details about the circumstances?

I would merely observe that, I'm not sure that that is the most tasteful question ever posted.

I would merely observe that, I'm not sure that that is the most tasteful question ever posted. So the answer is no... Apologies for any offence by asking the question but I tend to take rather a utilitarian approach to death. Regardless of the circumstances a death at 32 is horrific and my deepest sympathy goes out to family and friends.

I would merely observe that, I'm not sure that that is the most tasteful question ever posted. Maybe not, but for an apparently healthy and happy person to pass away at 32 is pretty shocking and it is not surprising if some may be a bit curious.

Fundamentally it isn't any our business.

Fundamentally it isn't any our business. It's posterity's business though. Let's be honest here is there any circumstance where the cause of someone's death who has put themselves in the public eye isn't going to be recorded and publicly mentioned? You might not approve or think that is relevant but it's going to happen anyway. Nothing detracts from the tragedy of someone dying at such a young age.

Manchester, Charlestown: reason for vacancy not known, missing councillor is Mark Hackett (Lab). He went on long-term sick leave after an event and an internal investigation in September. He sent a email rant to a Stop The War Coalition member who invited him to a event to speak (and sent a copy to every city councillor), accusing said organisator of: Being in a sleeper cell of IS in Salford. Being linked to the murder of taxi driver Alan Henning. He withdrew the accusations, admitted they were not based on any evidence and was found guilty by the investigation of three breaches of the Code of Conduct (bullying someone, intimitating a complainant and bringing the City Council in disrepute). No matter our view on Stop The War, that's way over the line (and libellious). That was 6 months ago, so, non-attendance, perhaps? www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/former-lord-mayor-found-guilty-10103985
