Not much swing from May in Tottington, then. Given the sad circumstances of the byelection Labour might have expected to do a bit worse than that.

It was something of a miracle that we ever won it in the first place Its the only time we have ever done so (it even stayed Tory in the mid 90s) Local issues had made the Tories *very* unpopular in the borough. We actually made an effort there in 2014 as a result, but with that factor less salient the Tories held on reasonably comfortably.

Well, it helps to live about 20m away from the ward in question.

That pretty much tallies with the feeling I got when I was knocking on doors. The Kipper vote was largely Tory facing and there just wasn't enough for us in the Chandler's Ford part of the division to overcome the majority Hiltingbury part. The support for the Tories in Chandler's Ford was pretty poor, but with Grajewski being Hiltingbury West councillor it boosted their vote in their best area, probably more than they ultimately needed. UKIP's vote looks more like what you would expect in a place like this now.

Well, it helps to live about 20m away from the ward in question. That hasn't stopped people getting these things wrong in the past
