This is going to be very bad. There's a grim irony that, as the religious reactionary element of the FN has diminshed, it finds itself opposed by religious reactionaries.

BBC say that exit polls show the UMP top, FN second and PS third. The PS bounce appears to have not translated when it mattered.

Have we got a map of results? My dad is away so my usual source of French news (who also translates it for me) isn't able to help.

The FN results in the Aisne are phenomenal. I can't find a canton where they drop below 30%.

Laon-2. Where they finished top, but with 'only' 29.67%. Not sure if the Poma 2000 is in Laon-1 or Laon-2.

Results mapped (taken before Pas-de-Calais declared). Doesn't differentiate those won outright and those going to the second round.

Also this infographic might be of interest... Candidates elected in the first round:Right & Centre Parties - 110 Left & Extreme Left - 32 National Front - 4 Other Parties - 3 My crude translations:Élus des le premier tour / elected in the first roundX en ballottage / X no. of candidates who'll be allowed to stand in the second round
Éliminés / candidates eliminated from the second roundWhilst no FN supporter, I'm fascinated by their rise. It'll be interesting to see whether there'll be a strong tactical vote against them this Sunday.

There are more than just a few cantons that might have been salvageable for the Left but where there is no Left candidate in the runoff because of disunity. A particularly good example is in one of the Le Havre cantons where PS and PCF candidate polled just over 20% each... urgh.

My father lives in a village in Manche. The FN only got 24% there as opposed to the regular right wing parties who got 46%. Having been there a fair bit, I'm surprised the FN, and to some extent the more leftist parties, didn't do better.

I'm not sure the FN having more visible women makes much of a difference. It has been suspected for decades that the female vote in France contributes disproportionately to Catholic, reactionary or general hard-right parties' vote tallies. Indeed, the Third Republic put off female suffrage for so long, not because the powers that be disagreed with the idea, but because they feared women were more likely to vote for clericalists and conservatives.
