Just got back from a couple of hours doorknocking in Bocking. Hadn't been before today and didn't do enough to claim any special expertise, but don't expect a high turnout - the Labour committee room aside, I didn't see a single poster for anybody anywhere.

Naughty doings from Labour in the Kenton by election, alleging that the Conservative candidate isn't voting for himself. They've apologised. Did they seriously think that the conservative candidate would respond positively to a Labour questionnaire?

That is now a 3-way marginal but it was not too close to call.

Croydon, Selhurst ward
David Wood (Lab) 1517 (71.5%) Tirena Gunter (Con) 246 (11.6%) Tracey Hague (Green) 148 (7.0%) Annette Reid (UKIP) 147 (6.9%) Geoff Morley (Lib Dem) 65 (3.1%)
total 2123 spoilt 13 turnout 2136 (18.6%) electorate 11,485
The best bit was seeing off UKIP. In 2014 the average votes were Conservative 514, UKIP 450 so it could have been a threat for 2nd place. The most fun bit was seeing Councillor Wood extrapolating from an 18% turnout to predict victory for Labour in Croydon Central in the general election.
The most surprising bit is the turnout. In the 10 previous by-elections in Croydon over the last 20 years (i.e. the ones I stood in) the turnout was between 26% and 29% in six of them. There were two outliers on 42% and 15%, and two higher on 37% and 32%.

Conservatives gain Bocking, UKIP fall to third. Hooray! (1) because Conservative gain, (2) because UKIP third, (3) because Councillor Canning is cute.

Maybe but this mostly isn't a ward where they will have spent a lot of time, whereas Labour will have done, both for Starmer and to produce a suitably enormous figure for the bye.
