Maybe the secret of Modi is that he doesn't - unlike so many of his type around the world - just major on the ethnicism and culture war stuff, but actually manages to combine this with governing effectively on the whole. Compare with the slapdash nature of Trump or Bolsonaro. I'm reminded of the bizarre fact that Modi has installed more plumbed toilets than any other leader in history. Not personally, obviously. Can't imagine he's down at the Delhi branch of Plumbase.

Sanitation is the route to civilisation. In Italy we were friends with a leading world expert (senior advisor to UN and its agencies) on fresh and foul water systems. He was firmly of the opinion that his narrow area of excellence was responsible over 1000-years for a greater improvement to life expectancy, general health and wellbeing than any other discipline including the entire medical industry put together.

Hilariously outdated: It was the XXth, when such stupid socialEngineers believed to have found the solution of all problems...

Vishnu Deo Sai is the next CM of Chattisgarh. He’s a tribal from the Kanwar tribe and represents the BJP stronghold of Kunkuri in the Jashpur district. Sai represented the predecessor Tapkara assembly seat between 1990 and 1998 before becoming the MP from Raigarh in 1999. He represented the seat continuously till 2019 and was a minister of state in the first Modi ministry. He has also had three stints as state BJP president. He will be the first tribal CM of the state.

Making a tribal from Sarguja CM was thus a no-brainer.

Dr Mohan Yadav is the next CM of Madhya Pradesh. He represents the holy city of Ujjain (Ujjain South) in the Assembly and is into his third consecutive term as MLA. He has been serving as the Minister for Higher Education in the Shivraj Singh Cabinet since 2020. As the name suggests, he’s a Yadav by caste.

Do you have a short brief on the components of the caste system and a view of how and why it formed, changed over time, and continues into present times?

This would be really interesting if ibfc would be so kind. It really is an aspect that we have limited insight into.

I won’t go into the history too much because it’s a fraught topic and a lot of it is debated for a variety of reasons. I’ll explain how the politics of this works in today’s India over the next few days.

I’ll explain how the politics of this works in today’s India over the next few days. That is very kind. It is a matter of considerable interest to a number of us who are well disposed to india and the culture in general. Like so many cultural matters that are old and deeply embedded there will be political divisions and overtones, but I wonder if you know of a reliable and not too biased source that could aid us?

Out of interest - do you think that caste has been weakened by Indian's economic growth and people moving off the land?

Thank you. Helpful but daunting in its complexity. I am getting the start of a basis to think out from.

Out of interest - do you think that caste has been weakened by Indian's economic growth and people moving off the land? Yes, definitely. Caste is at its weakest in informing both political and social choices in urban areas especially among migrants. Other forms of identity such as religion and language dominate cities more. One of the primary reasons for the BJP’s relative overperformance in the cities.

Bhajan Lal Sharma is the new CM of Rajasthan. He’s a party apparatchik who was a three term general secretary of the BJP’s Rajasthan unit. He is serving his first term as MLA from the BJP safe seat of Sanganer in the suburbs of Jaipur. By caste, he’s a Brahmin and has been picked as a compromise between the warring castes of Rajputs, Jats, Gujjars and Meenas.
