Mind you, all of those are arguably preferable to Laura K - who is becoming the Beeb's answer to Marcus Rashford.

The funny thing is how they’ve never been to the seat needed for an overall majority ie…

Although competition is stiff, I'd be voting for David Cahill

Almost to the minute, it's 54 years since the BBC floor manager and his small paint pot made a brief but memorable appearance on election night TV.

Sabbatical break for this; July 4th. ITN Elections at last. I came here to share this. Could be a good thing to watch between Sunderland declarations and the 1am glut.

Sabbatical break for this; July 4th. ITN Elections at last. Anyone here who actually watched the ITN coverage over the Beeb's at the time? There are times when their efforts have at least arguably been superior (eg 1987 and 2010) but many - as with other "big events" - watch the BBC as the "default" option.

I watched ITN in 1987. Alistair Burnett was the superlative presenter of his day

Are they putting up all of the ITN recordings, or just selected highlights? Because I do so want to see Brigadier Terence Clarke's reaction in 1966.
I've been watching the BBC's historical overnight coverage of previous elections, and, in line with previous conversations about the number of declarations being reduced in recent times, I tried to do a running tally of the number of seats shown on the night. (To stop confusing myself about criteria, if they showed any of it, I counted it, even if they jumped away to another seat, such as in 1997 with Torbay and Harrogate. I also didn't count the morning after declarations, as I didn't have access to most of those.)
1987 - 21 (copy was only about 4 hours long though) 1992 - 32 1997 - 41 2001 - 34 2005 - 43 2010 - 42 2015 - 39 2017 - 33 2019 - 17 (got this up to 57 by checking ITV and Sky's overnight coverage - but genuinely well under par for the BBC here.)
An interesting curio. Labour and Tory leaders are always covered, as expected. The Liberals? In 1992 and 1997, Paddy Ashdown's result got TV coverage on the BBC. In 2001 and 2005, Charlie Kennedy's result got TV coverage on the BBC. In 2010 and 2015, Nick Clegg's result got TV coverage on the BBC. In 2019, Jo Swinson's exit got ample TV coverage on the BBC. In 2017, Vince Cable and Nick Clegg and Jo Swinson got TV coverage of their results, but the BBC decided not to show actual Lib Dem leader Tim Farron's result. I believe Farron's result was announced while Theresa May spoke at her own count, and David Dimbleby covers it in "Tim Farron has retained his seat but anyway, back to the Tories" aside. Just an amusing outlier!

msc,my theory is some suits at the BBC declared that showing results is too slow and boring for a modern audience and that's why they've shrunk. Another factor is cost. I'm aware that there's been a huge drop in BBC funding and that has had its impact. This summer sees the BBC trying to cover local elections, Glastonbury, Wimbledon, with a team out in the Carribbean for the T20 and Germany for the Euros, and now it's polling day soon enough: the licence fee can only go so far.

Has Kay Burley been sacked yet for her reaction to the exit poll? The figures presented in it weren't even particularly shocking. David Dimbleby managed to completely maintain his composure over the far-more-shocking 2015 and 2017 exit polls.
I seem to recall reading something about how Adam Boulton was never given the exit poll results beforehand, which I assume is also the case with Kay Burley in the below video. Guess what? He also managed to maintain his composure.

Has Kay Burley been sacked yet for her reaction to the exit poll? ... If there were any logic or justice in Sky TV, Kay Burley would have been sacked many times many years ago

A factor the media will have to consider is that of podcasts. As expected, podcasts have gone from being amateur and shonky to being mass-media mass-produced full of celebs and former MPs. They were not supposed to turn into that (much like the Internet wasn't supposed to turn as horrendous as it has).
C4 gave me the first warnings that it was being produced as a podcast, not TV. The BBC was *awful*.
Gary Lineker has been thrown into focus for being Mr Approachable on MOTD and Mr Sweary on his podcast. You can't always ride both horses. I wonder what will happen as media continues to develop.
