I always get confused by the fact that the Kuomintang is the *pro* Beijing party

ReCycling this thread for today's regional & local elections plus referenda, which resulted unsurprisingly (considering the unpopularity of the DPP-president) in big wins for the Kuomintang and defeats for the DPP.
22 regions (counties and self-ruling cities):
06+09=15 KMT (ChiayiC., Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Yilan, Penghu, Kaohsiung [!] from DPP, Hualien & Kinmen from Ind.) 13 -07=06 DPP (held KeelungC., HsinchuC., Taoyuan, Chiayi, Tainan, Pingtung) 03 -02=01 Ind. (held TaipehCity, lost Hualien & Kinmen to KMT)
TaipehCity was extremely narrowly defended (~0.3%) by an Indep. from the "green" DPP-camp (who could perhaps run against the president - who has stepped down as DPP-leadress - next time, so his victory was perhaps the worst OutCome for her?).
The ref. (SameSex-"marriage", AtomicPower, label "Taiwan" at OlympicGames) ended also alltogether KMT-friendly.

The general election takes place on the 11th and Reuters has briefly profiled the three candidates. The pro independence Democratic Party and incumbent President Tsai Ing Wen is leading in the polls for the presidency and in the legislature. This would suggest that the CCP's efforts to influence the election in favour of the Kuomintang, as exposed by defecting spy William Wang, are destined for failure. mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN1Z3017#click=https://t.co/7zI0wA5JlE

The DPP-incumbent is far ahead (52:44), the parliamentary election should be closer.

With 76% of the vote in, Tsai Ing Wen is leading the Kuomintang by 57-39. This is a big defeat for the KMT. Don't get me wrong, they had a crap openly misogynistic candidate who ran against the media, he's now being sued by a media outlet, and he was exposed as making a payment to hush up a mistress. However, some serious questions have to be asked here by the KMT, particularly about their views on cross straits relations. The rumours of the CCP trying to help their former foes in the KMT fatally weakened their campaign from day one.

With 100% counted, the result is;
Tsai Ing Wen DPP 57.1%, Han Kuo You KMT 38.6%, James Soong PFP 4.3%.
Quite a slap in the face for Beijing who were desperate to stop Tsai winning again.

Mike Pompeo has formally congratulated Tsai, which could be seen as another slap in the face for Beijing I don't suppose the Hong Kong situation will have helped the KMT No. The Kuomintang's official position is to unify once the CCP falls, but their advocacy of close ties economically has handicapped them. People fear that once China gets an inch into Taiwan that it's all over. Thing is, as you say Vis a vie Hong Kong, they're probably correct.

I cannot claim to have expected such a BlowOut, especially not after the LocalElections 2 years ago.

As we remember: After Kuomintang had gained the city of Kaoshiung it nominated the new mayor and rising star Han for the presidential election. But he failed terribly and was recalled successfully by DPP. Tomorrow morning the votes of the mayoral SnapElection will be counted, but the OpinionPolls see unsurprisingly the DPP-man far ahead of the female ProTempore-incumbent.

So very clear, despite some re-alignment going in recently: The urban north shifting to DPP, the rural south to KMT. But Kaohsiung isn't rural, of course.
