Following normal usage, I think than the thread should be renamed By-election 4th/5th December, as Adur decided to call a by-election on the Friday for some reason.

Just done my first canvassing in Adur today, and very enjoyable it was (I had chosen an area I thought might be good potential territory for the Greens!)
UKIP have been out delivering in force - leaflets everywhere, but mostly in porches and front gardens. Tories have been out - 'I had that Tim Loughton here yesterday' was something I heard quite often; not always sounding favourable to him, tbh. I saw what looked like a faux-newspaper leaflet from them in someone's porch, but I didn't get a good look. It led on the news that the A27 is probably going to get upgraded, which is always a hot topic all the way along the coast here. Didn't see Labour, although they told our candidate that they were canvassing. Didn't see any literature from them.
I think about 2/3 of the ward has now had a leaflet from us, and we should finish that one off on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Devonian: our candidate in Adur is Jennie, not Jenny. She;'s told me off often enough for getting it wrong, it's only fair I pass it on to you!

DevonianYou forgot 2014 and 2002-2006 in your Rossendale results (two seats were up in 2007 not because of a review (last review was in 2002), but because of a vacancy). 2014: Lab 715, Con 554, UKIP 396 2006: Lab 642, Con 564, Grn 299 2004: Con 1024, Lab 829 2003: Con 559, Lab 551 2002: Lab 896/789/775, Con 524/510/389 That by-election is caused by the resignation of Liz McInnes (2014-2018 term), the new Heywood and Middleton MP.

That Mansfield vote has an odd mix of parties standing. Anybody know why the MIF aren't defending it? Their website seems to be updated reasonably often so they're clearly not winding down.
As for Thurrock, I briefly read the Labour candidate's name as John O'Grady- now that would have been an interesting selection.

I used the website of Andrew Teale, the Local Elections Archive Project (LEAP). link I think it's probably the better source out there (except the local authorities themselves, but they tend to remove old results).

There was also a by-election in Longholme ward in September 2004: C 720 Lab 511, C hold.

www.yourthurrock.com/Aveley-Election-just-got-dirtier/story-24923308-detail/story.html"Mud-slinging: Has the Aveley By-Election just got even dirtier? By YourThurrock | Posted: November 30, 2014 IT APPEARS that the Aveley by-election has now got even dirtier after a large UKIP sign at the side of a house has been vandalised. The large sign adorns the side of Tim Aker's parents house. It has become something of a tradition over the last four years. And for those four years, it has been unmolested. Until now. A photograph sent to YT, appears to show the sign on Mill Road, daubed with mud and a number of other materials. Thurrock UKIP have felt, under attack, over the whole campaign. A number of Thurrock Labour activists drew comparisons to UKIP and the Nazi's. The Thurrock Conservatives were seen as stoking things up when they referred to the UKIP MEP as Timur Aker in their election material. A reference to his Turkish parentage. UKIP were busy campaigning on Sunday lunchtime but we may catch up with them on Monday afternoon." www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2854566/Silence-Dave-biggest-immigration-gamble-yet.html"Are things turning nasty in Thurrock? Politics is getting increasingly ugly. One example is a Tory leaflet in Thurrock, Essex, that calls Tim Aker, Ukip’s candidate there, ‘Timür Aker’ in what, to me, seems a clear attempt to remind voters of his Turkish roots. This appears to be a cheap tactic, seeing as Aker is known by all – and refers to himself – as Tim. It seems clear what these Tories were trying to do, and it is worthy of nothing but contempt. The Tories won’t beat Ukip – locally or nationally – by diving headfirst into the gutter."

And, again from Andrew Teale's website, the missing results for Adur.
2008: Con 514, Grn 212, Lab 136, LD 99, UKIP 73 2006: Con 473, Grn 203, LD 168, Lab 159 2004: Con 560/503, Lab 454/434
The by-election is for the 2014-2018 term. TV host Mike Mendoza (previously on radio on Talksport, covering the 1AM-6AM timeslot on weekends, before being fired soon after having compared gay people to pedophiles) and now hosting a show on Latest TV, a local Brighton and Hove TV channel.
He already did that. He was elected as an independent in 2004 and resigned in 2005 when hired by Talksport. His election history is wierd. Elected in Brighton and Hove, he became a Conservative council for Peverel in 2002, became an independent, was elected as an independent in Marine in 2004 (all-out election), resigned in 2005, ran for UKIP for County Council in 2009, elected as a Conservative for St. Mary's in 2010, relected in 2014.
It's a very confusing path.
