It was what EROs did in most London boroughs in the 2010 general election (which coincided with local elections). All votes verified, then general election votes counted and the local government count held over until the following day.

Yep, same in Stoke - BBC Midlands were well unhappy having to wait overnight to see the BNP's demise in both their target seat of Stoke Central and their total wipeout on the Council after their resident psephologist from Staffordshire University had predicted gains on both scores.

C 1809 UKIP 1642 LD 1199 L 524 G 200 - might be out by one or two, as I didn't write the figures down and am doing this from memory.
The Tories were not expecting to win, so they'll be pleased.

C 1809 UKIP 1642 LD 1199 L 524 G 200 - might be out by one or two, as I didn't write the figures down and am doing this from memory. The Tories were not expecting to win, so they'll be pleased. It's certainly a small consolation, but will be little noticed. It makes me wonder what the result in Clacton as a whole might have been had the by-election been held under different circumstances (the death or resignation of the incumbent, Roger Lord being the UKIP candidate etc)

Blackpool Waterloo is a Con hold Con 406 UKIP 372 Lab 347 LD 34 BNP 17 That's a surprisingly poor labour performance. Our performance wasn't fantastic but a win is a win. A good UKIP performance (although Blackpool is one of the north west areas with the highest UKIP potential).
