What proportion of the division is comprised of the St Osyth ward? (I could probably check easily enough but one of you is likely to know off the top of your head). Obviously there will be a turnout boost in that part of the division plus a certain amount of coattails voting. I assume the by-election may have some impact even in those areas which are not in the constituency so would not say 'no chance'. Is the local paper in Brightlingsea etc the same as in Clacton or is it more Colchester oreinted?

St Osyth is about 20% of households in the division. Brightlingsea doesn't get much coverage in either the Colchester Gazette or the Clacton & Frinton Gazette, and I've never bought a paper there, but I suspect newsagents would primarily stock the Colchester Gazette if they have either. Alresford definitely looks much more to Colchester than Clacton and that's true to a slightly lesser extent for Thorrington and Great Bentley.

I doubt Brightlingsea will be counted on Thursday. Tendring Council (which manages the county by-election) will most likely focus on counting Clacton votes on Thursday.

I've been told that verification will be on Thursday night, after which those there just for Brightlingsea will be asked to leave, and reconvene the following morning.

Would suprise me if we lost all 3. I reckon we will hold Brightlingsea on the back of the effort for the Clacton by election. While the circumstances of the poll are unfortunate, with a strong result in May we might pull it off in Rushmoor too. Crawley has a fair chance of being a loss I'll admit.

If UKIP hold Brightlingsea, it'll be down to high turnout in St Osyth. And that may be easier said than done, given how many of the households in that ward are static caravans, many of which will not be inhabited year round. If Brightlingsea casts more votes than St Osyth, I'll be very surprised if it doesn't change hands.
