With any luck this will be the last election for such a position.
Likely to be called without delay which would mean polling day possibly 6 November?

Could be as clean as a fight as waging a war in a cesspit.

I wouldn't rule out a strong independent challenge under the circumstances.

I'm just perplexed why it's happening at all. If he brazened out everything else, what new ignominy made him realise his position was untenable?

The English Democrats came second here last time, one of their best ever results. However that was a couple of weeks before the Rotherham by election where they got steam rollered by UKIP. I'm sure they'd like to run again but the question is if they could raise the £5k deposit and campaigning money in time.
As for who is to be the UKIP candidate MEPs and MPs are allowed to run for the office but must resign as MPs or MEPs if elected. David Blunkett has rules himself out as Labour candidate as he says he doesn't want to trigger a by election.
Unconfirmed (but unsurprising) report that the Green Party have decided not to run.

Oh come on, David, cause another by-election, twenty just isn't quite enough this term. You're aiming for twenty-four, like in the 1987-1992 Parliament? Twenty of them were deaths. The four others were resignations. By the way, 2001-2005 only had 6 by-elections.

Is Bernard Rix of CoPaCC the retired judge?
CoPaCC is 'Comparing Police and Crime Commissioners' btw.

Many people on this forum would aim, I think, for as many byelections as possible (but of course, with as few deaths as possible, a difficult balancing act!).

Well, it's certainly heading in that direction with fewer grey-haired mavericks being around and more Tony Blairs/David Milbands/Louise Menches not seeing out their full terms.
