Whatever the reasons, it is a truly shocking result for the Tories. All in all, it's a fairly decent set of results for the LDs - even the seat they lost, their vote share held up OK, especially considering the indy was elected to the district council as a LD. The Conservatives probably benefitted from the lack of a UKIP candidate there.

The Conservatives probably benefitted from the lack of a UKIP candidate there. I wonder if a UKIP candidate would have split the vote enough for the Lib Dems to win. Any idea why they didn't have a candidate, that area is there natural territory.

I think in somewhere like Frome north the UKIP vote would be most likely to vote Tory otherwise so I think we might just have squeaked it if they'd stood.

I was surprised that UKIP didn't stand in Frome, and suspect it was the main factor that led to the Conservative win.
However, I wouldn't describe Frome as fertile territory for UKIP. Potentially we ought to gain far more there than they will if the Lib Dem vote does crack, but at present it looks like the Lib Dem vote at local level is holding up fairly well.
Frome is very different from most of the towns around it, like Shepton Mallet and Trowbridge, where I could see UKIP making inroads.
