As far as the homophobia is concerned I'm torn between saying on the one hand that no-one should have to put up with that, and on the other that he needs to toughen up a bit if he's going to be in local politics.
As for "obstruction" this could be just people opposing him because they genuinely hold different opinions. It's not clear but he's not entitled to have his own way all the time.

Yes he should toughen up and just put up with homophobic attacks . I am sure those in power at the time in Rotherham said the girls should just toughen up and put up with being raped .

I know Sam well and what he has had to put up with at the county council is appalling. Note that he's only stepped back from the county council and not Mendip where the culture has been far less febrile. Why should any gay councillor have to put up with homophobic abuse, and any young councillor have to put up with being patronised and ignored just because they are young? Sam worked his arse off to do what he's done, he's not giving it up without good reason!

Of course we don't know all the details but no one should have to put up with homophobic abuse, I don't think resigning is the right course of action though, reporting it to the correct authorities is.

Agreed ...... in theory..... I guess when you are in the eye of the storm your perspective will be different, especially when the correct authority may be the Standards Board

I guess when you are in the eye of the storm your perspective will be different, especially when the correct authority may be the Standards Board Yes, controlled by the group that has created the toxic atmosphere... Don't Standards Boards have a majority of non-Elected Member membership, and are Chaired by one of those Lay Members? Certainly ours is, and I assumed that was mandatory.
