Guido report on the Labour candidate selection

Local Labour activists in Heywood and Middleton are unhappy about the selection process to find a replacement for the late Jim Dobbin. Just a few days ago the Manchester Evening News named Richard Scorer, a local lawyer who has represented Rochdale child abuse victims, as the front runner. Voters seemed set to forgive Scorer’s employers Slater & Gordon for having the most annoying advert ever, and were ready to make him their next MP.



Yet for some reason Scorer’s name didn’t make the shortlist for tomorrow night’s hustings. LabourList reports that “party members have apparently raised concerns about the lack of “local” candidates on the list, despite several local councillors putting their names forward”. Instead members will have to choose between a trade union crony from Essex, two councillors from elsewhere in the North West and Miriam O’Reilly, who according to the Mail is “poised to ride to Ed Miliband’s rescue”. O’Reilly was the Countryfile presenter who sued the BBC for age discrimination and now serves on Harriet Harman’s commission investigating discrimination against older women. Amusingly, when O’Reilly tried to get selected in Nuneaton last year she lost, to a 22-year old. At the time Miriam promised “I’m moving to the area, whether I’m selected or not”. Born in Ireland and raised in Birmingham, she instead decided to move to Wales.



Will the people of Heywood and Middleton spot the second choice carpetbagger at the selection tomorrow night?

No doubt it'll be said that it's Rochdale Council trying to further diminish the status of Heywood...

Lib Dems select local man for Heywood and Middleton contest
Castleton resident Anthony Smith was selected unanimously tonight (Monday) as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Heywood and Middleton by-election at a meeting of all Liberal Democrat members in the constituency.
Smith has lived in Heywood and Middleton for almost his entire life and voters will therefore be guaranteed at least one local resident on the ballot paper in the October 9th election.
The father of four and local businessman has pledged a focus on building a stronger economy in the area, getting better jobs and training opportunities for young people. He is launching a campaign to turn the derelict Castleton Carnegie library into a centre for small businesses.
He will also focus on crime in the area following the closure of Heywood Police station.
Anthony said “I am privileged to have been selected for my home town and am committed to building a stronger economy and a fairer society right here in Heywood and Middleton.”
“The Liberal Democrats are the only party holding Labour to account in Heywood and Middleton and I will carry on the proud tradition of people like Cllr Peter Rush in standing up for my neighbours and friends in the local area.”
“Things have not got better fast enough in Heywood and Middleton, it is time for a different voice to Labour to be heard.”
Smith has welcomed the Liberal Democrat focus on creating a fairer society, particularly in the field of education where the local school governor has seen the impact of the Liberal Democrats in government.
He said, “Growing up I left school at 16,worked on a shop floor, faced redundancy, reskilled and ran my own business. I know how hard individuals in our area have to work to support their families. This is why I am a proud Liberal Democrat, they make looking after family that little bit easier, providing free school meals for under fives and giving tax cuts to the people who earn the least instead of those that have higher incomes and can take more of the load.”
The by –election was called following the sad death of Jim Dobbin MP. Anthony said, “Jim was a true gentleman and a man of integrity who had the rare gift to cross political divides and work with people from all backgrounds. Our thoughts are with his family”.
