For town council enthusiasts, some background on today's Weston-super-Mare Town Council Wyvern ward by-election.

This small ward of 1650 electors mainly consists of Edwardian-era suburbs adjacent to Weston town centre, and is named after the nearby Wyvern secondary school, which was itself renamed Hans Price Academy in 2011.

This ward is a subdivision of the Weston South district ward, overall an impenetrable Labour stronghold, however this particular section is Labour's weakest. The result in 2011 was Lab 42.5% Con 35.8% LD 21.8% - a not very comfortable Labour win.

The Labour candidate, James Clayton is already a district councillor since a 2013 by-election, the Conservative candidate Jocelyn Holder was last year's mayoress. Two first time candidates, Lib Dem Eliott Stephen and UKIP's Alex Paton complete the field.

The Conservatives will fancy their chances to take the seat from Labour, as they are currently one short of a majority on the town council, but are likely to be thwarted by the intervention of UKIP. Expect a narrow Labour win on a very low turnout.

How do you find out stuff like this? I've just looked on the Weston town council website and can find no ward map on there. A few parishes I know do show ward boundary maps but most don't. Do you have some single source of parish council ward boundaries?

Some of the parish ward boundaries are in the LGBCE reports.

There is no central record of parish ward boundaries - not even at the Ordnance Survey which doesn't always have up to date records. Powers to amend them lie with local authorities (or with the LGBCE where they are dividing parishes as part of their ward proposals) and sometimes the LAs make changes without telling anybody. Other times there are parish wards being used for elections where the council hasn't made the relevant order and so have no legal basis.

The local authority has the responsibility to administer parish wards, and obviously will keep records of them, though they may not make this information readily available.

If the wards were created by the LGBCE as part of a wider review, the boundaries should be in their reports.

In the case of Weston, the parish was a new creation in 2000, and the wards were created on a rather ad hoc basis from existing polling districts.

North Somerset UA at one time incorporated parish wards into its interactive mapping, but this feature seems to have gone now.

So yes, it's not something you can find readily online.
