Jason Weyman , Independent councillor for Deganwy ward on Conwy CBC has announced on his own blog that he is resigning his seat to take up a new job offer . Hmm, one of those places on the northern Wales coast where the Tories should win comfortably, but often contrive not to. The Conservatives hold the other seat in this 2 seat ward .

Inspired me to check out (and Find) a pub there called Maggie Murphy's (albeit now called Castle View) on google street view. Spent a fun Night there in about 1976. There's also 'Acorn Antiques': Link to Google street viewNot sure I agree that it's so naturally Tory as all that. It certainly has an area which is full of large prosperous homes, and a marina, but most of it is middle class bungalows, and the 2001 Census for socio-economic classification shows higher than average E (lowest grade workers, or on state benefits) as well as C1s.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is actually quite easy to pronounce. It's possibly more difficult for English speakers unfamiliar with Celtic languages to write.
What's so difficult about Sgir' Uige agus Ceann a Tuath Nan Loch?

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar means Western Isles Council. The name of the area “Western Isles” is actually Na h-Eileanan an Iar – and this is the title used in the Electoral Arrangements Order.
Can anyone help me with the translation – because Ceann a Tuath nan Loch – the gaelic for the North Lochs area on the eastern coast of Lewis south of Stornoway literally means “the head of the lochs to the north”?
Ward 8 – covering the eastern coast road north of Stornoway up to Tolsta – is Loch a Tuath. Does this mean North Loch or maybe North Bay?

Loch a Tuath is named after the bay to the north of Stornoway. In English this is known as Broad Bay. LEAP has very rough translations of all the ward names.

The elections for Kent CC, Maidstone Central and Maidstone BC, Allington are indeed on 18th October. * The candidates for the former are Con, Lab, LD along with Green, UKIP and Eng Dem * whilst in Allington they are Con, Lab, LD, Green & UKIP - all subject to withdrawal by Tuesday * No one is standing in both contests * The Conservative, Green and UKIP candidates for the County Council stood for their respective parties in 2009 in this 2 member Division * The Conservative candidate in Allington stood in 2012 and 2011, whilst the Labour candidate stood in 2010 and also in the County election in 2009.

Now that we know the Kent / Maidstone elections are on 18th October, there are 18 known current vacancies pending not yet called with a further 3 possible impending. The time line for the 18 known vacancies is given by:
* 1 following a death at the end of June - Wolverhampton (Lab) * 2 following resignations during July - Havant (LD) & Merthyr Tydfil (Ind) * 2 as a result of deaths in the first half of August - Neath Port Talbot (Lab) & Stockton-on-Tees (Ind) * 6 arising in the second half of August, 5 from the death of the previous councillor and the other from a resignation * 5 deaths, 1 ill health resignation and 1 resignation during September.
Whilst 15th November may well see a relatively high number of by-elections, there are only 5 known current vacancies which will have arisen more than 3 months earlier unless, that is, they are held before then.

Ouseburn is quite an interesting ward. It's a city centre ward (just to the east of the centre) and is one of the biggest student wards in Newcastle. Even in 2001 there were over 2,000 full time students in the ward (26.8% of total population); there have been more student developments since then. The majority of the households are purpose built flats (almost all of the remainder are terraced houses).
The socioeconomic characteristics of the non-students show a sharp divide between those in higher status jobs (typically in the property industry) and those doing semi-routine or routine jobs. There aren't many in the middle.
It used to be the Sandyford ward, which was Labour up to 2002. An October 1995 byelection (for two seats) had the good result of Lab 1,256, 1,217; L Dem 326, 284; C 306, 253; Ind 105.

Students are notorious for not voting. There has certainly not been any sign of student backlash losing LibDem votes in this ward . 2006 LD vote 773 2007 LD vote 861 2008 LD vote 814 2010 LD vote 1713 ( GE year ) 2011 LD vote 932 2012 LD vote 908
