It looks like 34 by-elections during July 2014 together with 3 deferred elections

6 on 3rd July plus 2 deferred elections

7 are in district councils with annual elections including 5 where there were contests within the ward on 22nd May
5 are in Unitary Authorities where there were all out election in 2011
3 are in Unitary Authorities where there were all out elections in 2013
1 is in a Unitary Authority with annual elections including a contest in the same ward on 22nd May
3 are in County Councils last contested in 2013
3 are in Metropolitan Boroughs where there was an election in the same ward on 22nd May
3 are in Welsh Councils and 1 in Scotland last contested in 2012
Conservatives are defending 10 seats, 3 following the death of the previous councillor and 7 resignations
- including 1 where the former councillor was sitting as an Independent
Labour defend 11 seats, 8 following a death and 3 a resignation
Liberal Democrats defend 5 seats, 4 following a death and 1 a resignation
UKIP defend 3 seats, 1 death and 2 resignations
Independents defend 3 seats, 2 deaths and a disqualification
SNP defend 1 seat following a resignation
Greens defend 1 seat also following a resignation
Nominations have now been published for all 34 of the by-elections:
Conservatives are contesting all 34 seats, Labour 31, Liberal Democrats 21, UKIP 30, Greens 16
whilst there are 16 Independents contesting 12 seats, 2 Mebyon Kernow and 2 TUSAC along with 1 each SNP, Plaid Cymru, Its Our County, Liberal, English Democrat, BNP, British Democrats, Patriotic Socialist, Blue and No Description - a total of 162 candidates for the 34 seats.
2 of the 3 deferred elections are in district councils, 1 annual and 1 bi-annual elections, with the 3rd for 3 seats in a London Borough
- Conservatives are defending all the seats although there are significant boundary changes in the London ward
- predictions for the 3 seat ward to be based on the average for each party: 3 each Con, Lab, LD, UKIP, Green, TH 1st, 2 TUSAC, 1 Ind
