Another possibility is that it is a 2-seat vacancy and that some of the party 'labels' are wrong, although A.J. Elliott appears in previous years as a Conservative.

The long threatened triumph of the Conservatives in Silver St ward comes to pass. There was a general election later this year of course but with not much of a discernable swing in the constituency and the ward reverts quite strongly to Labour in subsequent elections. Mr Taylor goes down to defeat in 1954 but is elected for Church St ward in 1955 as is Mr McLeod in 1957, having won their spurs so to speak in the more difficult ward. There may have been other factors but I can only presume that the Tories worked Silver St very hard to achieve this result.

The Times for November 1938 shows that Edmonton had 32 councillors, I suspect that this would mean 24 directly elected and 8 aldermen. In turn, that would mean four wards electing two councillors each over a three year electoral cycle. If this is true then the additional vacancy in Church Street ward will have been a casual vacancy that took place at the same time as the normal run of elections - in effect a by-election.
You're right about the 1939-45 period. Basically any borough with elections in April will have had them in 1939 but not 1945, those in November will have voted in 1945 but not 1939.

I have found a Snary family tree page which does indicate that there was a family with this name in Edmonton earlier in the century, so hopefully it is correct. Couldn't find anyone with the initial M though, so presumably the next generation. There was a Leicestershire county cricketer in the 30s with the surname.

Another long serving Edmonton political couple are worth highlighting here: Rita and Eric Smythe. They went on to be Enfield borough councillors as well (Jubilee and Alphage wards) and by the time they retired had clocked up over 100 years of local government service between them. Rita fought Middlesbrough West in 1955 and Billericay in 1959 and 1964, losing only by just over 1,000 in her last contest.

Another Tory elected in Silver St ward and Mr White the Independent almost doubles his vote on the previous year. The Liberals are back after a six year absence and go straight into second place in Church St with an almost 90% increase on their previous vote. A lone Communist signals the return of his party too after a decades absence, but without a matching vote boost.
