The SDF was Hyndman's party, I think? It was - but his control freakery and jingoism caused it to split on several occasions with most leading lights ending up in the Labour Party or the British Socialist party , forerunner of the Communist party. It carried on in its re-created form until the 30s I think, but to no great point.

In a strained world cup link, Sepp Blatter was being romantically linked with a Mrs Barrass earlier this year. The Labour annual of 1908 has the Edmonton Mrs Barrass living at 356 Hertford Road. Switzer appears to be a Swiss name.

Winser is the second former ILP candidate (along with Oliver) to now re-appear under the Progressive label. Candidates are also standing in successive years (Hatch, Platten) trying to get elected as Neil M wondered a while back. Note also the appearance of Frank Broad who was later elected as the first Labour MP for Edmonton (1921-31) and (1935-45)

As elections were in November IIRC, these would have been after the declaration of war, which is a sobering thought. Not sure if the Tradesmans and Ratepayers candidates were in a pact or standing against each other, or why there were so many Trades and Labour candidates in Fore St. It could be another transcription error or something else.

The forward march of Labour started. "DSF" candidates were presumably from the DSSF (Discharged Sailors and Soldiers Federation) who had stood candidates in the 1918 general election. Our old friend H Barrass stood as an Independent candidate in the Edmonton constituency in 1918, with Broad as the Labour candidate and the former (and future) MP Henry Harvey Vivian for the Liberals. Vivian was a Trade unionist but anti suffrage Liberal. The Tory MP was Sir Alfred Warren who had been Mayor of Poplar 1910-18. In the 1922 election Broad won the seat and the Liberal standard bearer was Fore St candidate E T Rhymer, who went on to become a longstanding magistrate and President of the North London branch of the Historical Association, but doesn't seem to have ever stood for the council again. Selwyn Yates was the vicar of St Peters, Edmonton and had made a claim against the RAF for occupying his church hall during the war and subsequent loss of revenue from church bazaars etc. He had founded Ellendeane House in Bexhill, first as a holiday home for London children and after the war as a home for "fatherless boys".

First labour party candidates here are former ILP'ers. Might well have been unopposed. Local elections during the Great War were not suspended until the Elections and Registration Act was passed at the end of July 1915, but there was a lot of pressure before then to avoid contests in a time of national crisis - especially when it became clear in spring 1915 that the war would not be a short one.

I don't think your UDC elections took place in the November of each year. November was reserved, I seem to recall, for Metropolitan Boroughs, County Boroughs and so on. Urban and Rural District elections in Middlesex, which Edmonton was a part of at this time, took place either in late March or early April each year. See, for example, the list of annual polling dates for Harrow-on-the-Hill UDC, which was another UDC in Middlesex: www.harrow-elections.co.uk/resources/1894AppendE.pdfYour only election in WW1 was therefore in 1915.

thanks for clarifying. This has some bearing on the "Union Jack" controversy of 1921 which I'm about to get onto.

Sometime in early 1921 the ruling Labour group on Edmonton UDC decided not to fly the Union Jack on Empire Day (May 24th) which had started in Candada in 1898, and in the UK in 1902 (but not officially instituted until 1916). This caused a furore and a successful attempt to re-instate the flag lead to the ex-serviceman who made the attempt (a Mr Gill) falling off the town hall and breaking his leg. The Public Welfare Association was a combination of Liberal and Tory candidates and the hugely increased turnout and swing to the PWA tends to suggest that the controversy had a big effect on the election. Cllr Albert Deffee, elected as an Independent was described as the "leader of the (pro) Union Jack party" and at a council meeting which was besieged by demonstraters challenged the whole council to resign over the issue. By the autumn of the same year a group of councillors described as Communists had been expelled from the Labour group, and a new flag had been bought.

A spectre is haunting Edmonton - the spectre of Communism. The Communist candidates include three former Labour councillors: Porteous, Measure and Hawkins. Stephens also a former Labour councillor but whether he defected to the left or the right isn't clear. With the exception of a single candidate in Bury St the following year, there are no more Communist candidates until 1933. Cllr Albert Defee's Independent description now includes an "ex service" reference possibly to try and emphasise his role in the flag controversy of the previous year - it's notable that Welfare only stood two candidates in this ward, presumably in a formal/informal pact.

Labour still a bit on the back foot, with Independents making inroads in Bury St ward. I haven't been able to find anything out about Tughan yet but he must have been well known locally to do so well from nowhere especially against Welfare and local traders candidates (I presume this should be Bury St traders but again, no precise info). Holt who stood in 1922 is the last, lonely Communist until 1933.

Labour win all seats up for election in all three wards for the first time since 1920. Not sure why there appear to be four Labour candidates in Church St or four elected in Fore st. This is the first appearance of the redoutable Mrs Catharine Tabraham, charwoman and councillor. More of her later....
