This is currently going on. Results won't be out until all areas have finished voting, which will be in the middle of May. Opinion polls have consistently pointed towards a change of government and the victory of the main opposition alliance, the NDA (in which the biggest party is the quasi-fascist BJP). The ruling UPA (largest party of which is the party of Independence and hereditary Nehru-Gandhi family fief the INC) is predicted to have a very bad election indeed. The next Prime Minister is likely to be Narendra Modi, the BJP Chief Minister of Gujarat. This is regrettable because Modi is a mass murderer. This does not seem to matter much to the media (in India and internationally) BECAUSE HE MAKES THE TRAINS RUN ON TIME.

The map will be very different after the election, but then it always is. Unless the polls are catastrophically wrong, more orange is likely in the north. Other than that: fuck knows. Even a partial comeback for the Left Front in West Bengal (an idea that seemed laughable a few months ago) has been seriously speculated.

What's the electorate of these constituencies? About a million?

I don't have the figures in front of me, but around about that or thereabouts. Of course until the current boundaries were brought in for 2009 there had been no boundary changes since 1977: result was constituencies like Outer Delhi with electorate over THREE million by 2004... while Chandni Chowk in the heart of the old city had one of 300k.

Laloo has been going around calling Modi a killer. Telling it like how it is.

Indian exit polls are atrocious, but obviously this does not look good. Some of the assumptions about seats-into-votes are as laughable as ever, of course...

Counting starts in a few hours. Although this may be quite depressing it will also be a lot of fun.

Looks like the BJP will be able to rule on their own if they want to. Congress possibly won't even have the title of leader of the Opposition with a projection of 46 seats. AFAIK, you need 55 seats to be leader of the opposition.

Maybe Trinamool Congress (which has nearly as many seats - ! - having just destroyed the awful WB Commies) will merge back so as to claim the post for their dear leader?

Provisional results map. Sorry about the lack of party keys: I'll sort that out properly again at some point... honest. Some results will still change and flip about, no doubt. But anyway. Larger version

Knowing utterly nothing about the popularity of the parties in various regions, would anyone be able to fill me in as to where each major party is traditionally strongest?
