Also really good to see the 650 +/-5% figures in there by default, kevinlarkin – but there's a typo in the lower bound: it should be 65,533, not 65,553. Well spotted. I have updated the defaults. I will give some thought to your point about the colours for the census statistics.

I spent a rather embarrassing amount of time yesterday creating a 100 seat plan for all of England (which I might post on here eventually, even if it is hideous in parts). There was only one problem that I noticed - the Isle of Wight was not included and its wards could not be added to a seat. I wasn't sure if that was deliberate decision to avoid cross-Solent constituencies, or an accidental omission.

The two seat gerrymander means that it could not be included with areas that have to comply with a specific quota and limited variation from quota.

I've finally got round to doing 74 London seats on the new quota - 7.5% threshold though. 2) under the AMS electoral system equality of electorates between constituencies is less of an issue (although the Germans take it very seriously which is why you get Wahlkreise with names like Brandenburg an der Havel – Potsdam-Mittelmark I – Havelland III – Teltow-Fläming I), because the top up seats can mitigate the differences. Not that seriously. A tolerance of 15% allowed when drawing them and up to 25% allowed before a review is triggered. (Was 25% and 33% until 2002!) Quite generous when the average population size of each is over 275,000 people. The German commission is just rubbish at naming, with each local authority often getting a mention.

Naming seats is the orerigative of states, most of which but not all of which follow that naming convention (and sometimes not for grandfathered names...) It works reasonably well, since everybody knows what district they're in... most of the time. Obviously when constituencies aren't drawn with regard to districts, as around Potsdam and Brandenburg towns, but you then use these kind of names anyways, hilarity ensues.

Pete-sorry possibly to frustrate you but, although we don't know the regional entitlements yet, taking the 2019 general election electorates and 650, London would have 76 seats.

Indeed but of course the site hasn't been brought up to date with the electorate figures by ward (because they aren't available) so we can't do much until they are. To use the old Peter Snow catchprase which I use a lot - it's 'just a bit of fun'

Selby & Knottingley 72431 Doncaster North & Axholme 69492 (The second necessary compromise of this map; it makes the rest of South Yorkshire work) The Labour Party says no.

The Labour Party says no. would it be possible to butcher Don Valley instead? You could butcher it but not really to Labour’s advantage. The best Tory wards are towards the south away from Axholme/Selby so could only be removed from a potentially Labour seat by extreme gerrymandering. Their best bet would be to have none of Doncaster mixed with Axholme as from their perspective it would just waste Labour votes in places like Thorne. What that would mean for Don Valley is anybody’s guess, it’s not exactly the most coherent constituency to begin with!

The West Midlands and Staffordshire areas present special problems under a 650 seat plan with a 5% tolerance-many Black Country (i.e. Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton) wards are larger than the "tolerance range" of 6,898. Many constituencies either end up being slightly too small or slightly too large in terms of electorate. Here is my attempt at it (constituencies marked with an asterisk are in fact slightly under or over the allowable electorate limits meaning they will share a split ward with a neighbouring constituency): Wolverhampton North East 68,512 Wolverhampton South West 66,116 Bilston & Coseley 65,102* Aldridge-Brownhills & Burntwood (the cross Black Country-Staffordshire seat) 64,498* Walsall South 75,080* West Bromwich & Smethwick 69,187 Oldbury 73,923* Wednesbury 72,374 Halesowen & Stourbridge South 68,520 Dudley 71,193 Kingswinford & Stourbridge North 70,174 Walsall North 72,944* Cannock Chase 73,470* Tamworth 71,948 Lichfield & Stone 69,610 Burton 72,542* South West Staffordshire 72,132 Stafford 71,247 Newcastle-under-Lyme 71,622 Stoke-on-Trent North 71,946 Stoke-on-Trent Central 71,586 Stoke-on-Trent South 71,145 Leek 72,617* The seats of Stone and Stourbridge are the disappearing seats. As awkward as this plan is, the 5% tolerance limit and the knock-on effects on Stafford that dismantling South Staffordshire would have had (e.g. to recreate the old Brierley Hill seat) necessitated it.

Already done a 100-seat map - so long ago it was using the old Boundary Asst! I just never got around to posting it.
I must see if I can dig it out , and see if it's not as hideous as it may have been , when I get some free time

The West Midlands is a problem how ever many seats you have if the threshold is 5%. As with London, it's possible to come up with a decent plan using a 7.5% threshold. Actually the whole region only needs to lose one seat and Staffordshire can still stand alone with 12 (likewise SHropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire can keep all their seats with just a little rejigging). My solution here would be to have one seat crossing the boundary between Solihull borough and Warwickshire Wolverhampton South West | 66116 | Sutton Coldfield | 73172 | Meriden | 69561 | Wolverhampton North East | 68512 | Birmingham Perry Barr | 63894 | Solihull | 65866 | Bilston | 65102 | Birmingham Handsworth | 67802 | Coventry North | 67979 | Halesowen & Stourbridge | 69170 | Birmingham Edgbaston | 64350 | Coventry East | 71482 | Brierly Hill | 69641 | Birmingham Northfield | 70048 | Coventry South | 70570 | Dudley | 71590 | Birmingham Bordesley | 71007 | Stratford-On-Avon | 72543 | Rowley Regis & Tipton | 63839 | Birmingham Selly Oak | 66181 | Warwick & Leamington | 69256 | Warley | 70814 | Birmingham Hall Green | 73991 | Kenilworth & Southam | 68866 | West Bromwich | 70879 | Birmingham Yardley | 69911 | Rugby | 69197 | Aldridge-Brownhills | 67141 | Birmingham Erdington | 66448 | Nuneaton | 65776 | Walsall North | 64186 | | | Warwickshire North | 74124 | Walsall South | 65071 | | | | |

Due to the particularly radical re-warding of Birmingham for its 2018 elections I left out Birmingham from my West Midlands plan.
