Apparently Manuel Valls says 14 mayoralties at least have gone FN. I see that the article I linked to there has now been updated and now lists Mantes-la-Ville 30.26% as well as three towns won by the League of the South Camaret-sur-Aigues 36.61% Orange 59.82% (1st round) Bollène 55.35% so possibly that's the 14 being referred to Frejus, Mantes-la-Ville and Beziers are big deals- some of the rest are mickey-mouse towns but still quite impressive captures. But those first three are the ones that are the big deal, I'd say.

I will not flinch from the fact that President Hollande and the PS did badly and that both the UMP and the FN did well, the latter confounding the pundits who thought they would win so many towns as they did. Why? The classic excuse of any Party in Government which is punished by the electorate in Local Elections is "It is a Mid-Term protest". That MAY be true but I will not use it as a get out. I feel that Hollande's equivocation and seeming to flirt with the Anglo-Saxon Austerity Paradigm will have scared off some normally PS voters and that he should now return to a more Socialist course. A Reshuffle and a new PM would also be beneficial at this time. He appears to have scared a lot of them off to the Right- see Limoges... No. Swing voters are displeased at him, so they vote for opposition. You are well-aware than swing voters aren't ideological. They like their government, they vote for it, they don't like it, they vote against it. The base also abstained at a significant level, because they aren't getting what they voted for. They voted for Socialists, they got a Merkel-puppet.

Depends what you mean by "RIGHT"? If it's the FN then they are playing the same trick as of old and wooing the disaffected working class voters. Remember the full name of the NAZIs was the NSDAP that is the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei though they were anything BUT Socialist in the generally accepted meaning of that word and would NOT be considered Right Wing by the solely Economic Neo-Con meaning given these days to that term. A swing to the UMP, France's Tories would of course be a different matter but I do not see Les Dindes voting for Xmas which a Cope government would surely entail.

Jean-Marc Ayrault must be allowed to fall on his sword or removed by Hollande and while he is at it he should also move or sack Christiane Taubira the Justice Minister.

Ayrault wanted to resign yesterday, but was dissuaded of doing so by his advisers. It would have done much damage to PS. Better to let Hollande replace him (which will most likely happen today or tomorrow).

If you ask to many right-wingers (and even some on the left), their main issue is than she is black. The number of time she was compared to a monkey or shown bananas, even by "decent" people, is horrifying. People are upset than she is shortening some sentences, but she has no choice, prisons are already overcrowded, can't fit more people in them.

And of course Labour in 83 and the Tories in 2001 are prime examples of deciding that you have lost because you weren't hardline enough the last time out.

Rachida Dati was (is) black though and I don't recall it being an issue for her (more focus on who the father was). So shorter sentences thing is a serious issue in France? Or does she just play badly in the media?

Exactly Maxque!I meant the UMP of course, the standard right-wing party. I would have thought the explicit reference to Limoges would have made that clear. Your chums would do well to think about why you lost the likes of Henin-Beaumont. Or why so many places turned to a divided and broadly incompetent UMP who have shown themselves almost incapable of challenging the PS properly. Or indeed why Hollande's popularity ratings are lower even than arseholes like Sarkozy and Cresson managed to achieve.

Or does she just play badly in the media? Yesterday, Dati said than the right had work to do in that area, being victim of racist insults coming from right-wingers. And, the media is trying to convince everyone than there is a big security problem in France (partly right, partly wrong) and TV news love to talk about random violence events. A store was stolen, they interview the store owner and the neighbours, which are all saying than this happens becuse delinquence/immigrants/young people not being deterred enough. At its core, the French person is still quite reactionnary.

Or does she just play badly in the media? Taubira isn't helped by the fact that she is PRG rather than PS (some PS are still funny about it) and also because she fell out with Delphine Batho, who is PS royalty. But probably racism is a major issue as Maxque says.

About Dati, her comment was probably aimed at Claude Goasquen, mayor of the 16e arrondissement of Paris, who reportedy said "You won't come here to do your law,, you're not in Seine-Saint-Denis here. Don't bring in the capital your 93 behaviour". 93 being the department number of Seine-Saint-Denis, a poor and heavily-immigrant area. She thought about reporting him to the police for racial insult.
It's obviously racist, as she has no link with Seine-Saint-Denis.

So we now have a new PM here in France. Not too keen on the choice as I can smell the stink of Revisionist Blairism, or Milibanditry in this. I DO hope I am wrong in this apprehension.

Exactly Maxque! But I would have thought that you would welcome the left wing policies of FN? More benefits for the workers and all that crap. The reason that Hollande is flirting with the prospect of austerity, (to paraphrase), to any extent that he is, gannetfrancais, is because he is faced with the reality of the fact that France is broke. It last ran a budget surplus in 1974 and the game is now up. Wake up and smell the coffee, ffs. Not to mention a projected 100 billion euro deficit in the pension fund by 2050.

All he will do is drive away Working Class Voters but it will NOT attract UMP supporters to his banner.
