We should take advantage of this by trying to make the much discussed VoteUk meet up in Blacko.

We should take advantage of this by trying to make the much discussed VoteUk meet up in Blacko. The idea of working a by-election and then having a pint is not a bad one!

Looking at street view now. Haven't been to the place myself (very remote). Looks very nice though.

The predecessor ward was Pendleside; it was Liberal in 1984 but the Conservatives gained it in 1988. Shelagh Derwent was first elected in a byelection sometime in the 1992-96 term.

Polls closed. I presume it's counting tonight?

I like the way the Conservative leaflets for this byelection were headed "Shelagh stands down". Examples here: /photo/1/large
That's one way of putting it. 'Shelagh moved to Dorset and didn't go to any meetings so got disqualified' is another.

There can't be many wards where the toreis are winning by >50% share over the nearest competitor with all 4 parties standing.

I went canvassing with the MP and Tory candidate a few weeks back. This is not a 'new build' nor 'posh' area. Most of the housing I saw was either 1950's or 1970s. Traditional semis and bungalows which you will see in e.g. Croydon or outer Birmingham or any of Britain's towns and cities. The Tory vote was clearly strong.

No surprise then given the Socio-Economic profile of the ward.
