I suppose that the advantage of this approach is that the candidates know beforehand how long they will serve if elected. And it's a lot easier for us psephologists to anaylse the result. ... and should therefore be introduced for all multi-member FPTP elections. It would probably speed up a manual count too, with different coloured ballot papers for each vacancy.

It would probably speed up a manual count too, with different coloured ballot papers for each vacancy. But it lowers the amount of choice electors have. You may want to vote for Labour candidate on ballot 2, Labour candidate on ballot 3 and Lib Dem candidate on ballot 2. If they are all on the same ballot, they can, on different, they can't.

If they are all on the same ballot, they can, on different, they can't. On the other hand, electors who want to split their vote between different parties will find that the split is less likely to hurt one of the parties they support on a split ballot than on a single one.

Tory gain in Brockworth is appalling
I can only presume that firepower was being concentrated in Cheltenham to the detriment of this by election.

Iain, I think you will find many similar results for the Lib Dems when the rest of the locals have come in. If you look at the Bristol results, they are just as appalling for your party, and stunningly good for us. To brighten your day just a bit, the result from B&NES, Bathavon North by-election was: Conservative 1047, Lib Dem 712, Green 353, Labour 353, UKIP 316. This is a safe Conservative ward where the Lib Dems had only about a third of their vote previously, so a notable increase for your party, and good for us as well.

Gravesham Coldharbour was a Lab hold 43 votes ahead of UKIP's Sarinder Joshua Daroch. Had real hopes Josh might win...

There were 75 by-elections on 22nd May 2014 compared to some 118 this time last year, 74 previously listed plus a Liberal Democrat defence in Redcar & Cleveland only identified after the result was declared.
For "double" elections the convention used is for the leading candidate to have won the annual election whilst the second candidate, who serves the shorter time, to have won the by-election. This does tend to exaggerate the number of seats changing hands

Really? We should be getting a couple of councillors elected there on a regular basis, tbh. It's Oban South and the Isles, where in 2012 there was no Labour candidate and the SNP candidates got 58% of first preferences between them. Certainly not what I'd have expected, and not really where I'd have most expected Labour to make progress in Argyll & Bute either. The LibDems also did surprisingly well.

Yes you are right. There was also a town election for the same ward which UKIP won. The council's website does not make sufficiently clear which result is for which contest so you do have to back to the SORN.

Always a strong Labour presence in Oban, a presence which openly supported tactical voting with a nod and a wink. The LibDems have lost all these now. I have had the pleasure? of being at a meeting where all three Labour A&B Councillors were present in the late 90's.
