There are 73 known by-elections on 22nd May 2014 compared to some 118 this time last year although it is possible more could still be identified. This list incorporates those listed by Listener but David Boothroyd has not yet updated his Blog so some others may have been missed.

Here is a summary of the parish by-elections being held on 22 May. The Conservatives are not defending some seats, where they are giving up in difficult circumstances, Horwich, Lancing and Sompting. UKIP are not defending their seats in Stowmarket and Watford Rural.

James Butcher, who works for Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, Mike Weatherley, said that Sompting parish council was “worse than a children’s party”. He described it as a “Vicar of Dibley” council and said that there were occasions during meetings when he felt like he was having an “out-of-body experience”. He remains a member of Lancing Parish Council. He said that he and two fellow councillors were resigning because "It is our belief that Sompting Parish Council is an enormous waste of taxpayers' money and an embarrassment to the people of Sompting".

There are 34 single seat contests and 40 double elections giving a total of 114 seats being contested. The Conservatives are not contesting 4 of the seats (all having just the one candidate in a double election) whilst Labour are likewise not contesting 7 of the seats. Overall the Conservatives are contesting 96% of these vacancies, Labour 94%, Liberal Democrats 72% with UKIP 55% and Green 39%.
