He prefers not to stand in a general election year when the vote will be more polarised. I hope they lose the seat. |

Just realised I'd posted this on the Coventry thread, but not here. Conservative councillor Kevin Foster is resigning from his seat in Cheylesmore ward, Coventry to focus on his Parliamentary campaign in Torbay. The by-election will be a double election.

For the slightly bizarre reason that he's decided to rat-run to the Thorpe ward midway through his term. That is incorrect , as posted on here previously it is partly a personal feud against his fellow ward councillor Dr Vel but more so a personal feud against Cllr Kaye in Thorpe ward who defected from Independent to Conservative and is due up this year . The feud is real, but it is a rat-run as Thorpe is generally much safer for the independents than Westborough. As they seem to be fairly consistently presenting themselves as being to the right of the Tories these days, that tendency is likely to become even more marked in future. |

Peter Heaton-Jones has resigned to concentrate on North Devon, where he's the Conservative PPC, timing was to ensure the by election was on May 22

Double vacancy so someone has caused a by-election but unable to work out who as the council website still shows all three councillors and nothing gleaned from the usual information sources (just the machine gun posing Lib Dem councillor confirming he won't be resigning...!)

Is the Davie Paterson who's standing a different Davie Paterson to the one who topped the poll in neighbouring Hawick & Hermitage ward and is therefore already a sitting councillor? All seems rather odd. One of the other indies (Watson McAteer) was the unsuccessful LD candidate last time. |

Nothing in local news, but he got in a verbal fight with Marion Short at last Community Council meeting, so perhaps the goal is only to cripple her candidacy. |

Given he got 45% of the vote in 2012 in thev neighbouring ward, if it is the same guy I'd have though he'd have a chance of winning and what would he do then?

Amber Valley BC - Heage & Ambergate. Term ends 2015.
Veteran Labour councillor Maurice Gent is retiring for the second time (he lost by 10 votes in 2000, came back in 2003, retired in 2007 but was persuaded to stand again in 2011)
Maurice was the last of the 'founder' councillors first elected in 1973 still serving. This is a reasonably significant by-election in the context of who gets overall control as Maurice had a sizeable personal vote (hence getting him to restand). The other seat in this ward was held by the Tories in 2012. This resignation could make it that much harder for Labour to take control if the Tories snatch this vacancy.

A resignation - Not and a by election on May 22nd - NOT
Confusion reigns on Cheltenham BC .
It appears that Andy Wall , Conservative councillor for Battledown sent the council in January an Email giving "formal notice" that he intended to stand down in order that the vacancy could be filled on May 22nd . The council apparently have said that an intention to resign is not an official resignation and therefore he is still a councillor . If he were to resign now it is too late for the by election to be held on May 22nd .
The local Conservatives are putting the blame on the chief executive who in return is saying that any competent political party would know the
strict electoral rules and not send in a " resignation " with no effective date but giving a date for the " by election " which is not in the power of the resigning councillor to demand .
