Ethandune is a cracking name for a ward! Origin?
Thank goodness they didn't go for "Westbury Rural" !

Yep , Long gone as with Woore , Bogside , Manchester , Lewes , Buckfastleigh , Stockton and a few others Woore? As in Shropshire? Correct , race course closed 1963 . It was one of the more eccentric race course being National Hunt only being a tight 1 mile round with almost continuous very sharp left hand bends . The course was in fact at Pipe Gate and not to be confused with the nearby Point to Point course at Mucklestone .

Ethandune is a cracking name for a ward! Origin? Thank goodness they didn't go for "Westbury Rural" ! I think Ethandune was a place named in the Saxon Chronicles (9th century) where Alfred defeated the Danes. However, I think that place is supposed to be further north, somewhere near Hungerford (Berks). Why this ward has taken the name I don't know, but this central swathe of Wiltshire likes to see itself as a mystical centre (home to more crop circles than anywhere else), so I suspect this may be why.

'A few others ...' - Wiki lists 97 courses that closed their doors 1900-81. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_racecoursesIt mentions the old grandstand still being vsiible at Buckfastleigh. I love to find the remnants of defunct venues in all sports. There are some fascinating dead football grounds around, from Third Lanark in Glasgow to non-league 'stadia' like Haslingden and South Liverpool.

Agreed , some of these old race courses I had heard about , Manchester and Ally Pally I had actually been to but I had never known of the 2 different Portsmouth courses .

Having checked Wiki I discover I know the site as it is now the Bearstone Stud which is a prominent feature of the area!

I believe that one of Buckfastleigh's stands was at Torquay United for decades after removal. Manchester Racecourse is now mainly part of Salford University, but there is talk of a new course. Looking at that list, I now have to go and find the site of Winchester Racecourse!

Looking at that list, I now have to go and find the site of Winchester Racecourse! I never knew that, just googled it, turns out it was the old main stand with wooden seats, only demolished in 2011. Having sat there, I can say that let alone racegoers, it wasn't really fit for horses or any other animal come to think of it...

Yes, though it sadly died a few years ago. At least it was only in the terrace, rather than on the playing surface as at the St Lawrence Ground.
