European Election for Belgium and Luxembourg

An interesting development in this election, in Wallonia anyway, is the return in the polls of the far-left PTB, under a combined PTB-GO list where the Communists and Revolutionary Communist League have joined in. Now, purely anecdotally, I spent a year living in Liege in the mid 2000s and even turned up at a lefty festivals in town (out of political curiosity, I must stress!), and never saw any sign of the PTB- but then Wallonia was and is a PS one-party state- so this is a bit of a surprise. Unusually, the PTB are a Belgium-wide party. Link in French for those interested: www.lesoir.be/412832/article/actualite/belgique/politiclub/2014-01-27/trois-partis-d-extreme-gauche-s-unissent-sous-banniere-ptb-goApparently in recent years they have made their presence felt in depressed Walloon towns such as Herstal and Seraing- for those unfamilar with the area, both are astonishingly depressed places which are far more challenged then anywhere I have been in Britain. In more bizarre news, there is a Francophone from Charleroi on the N-VA's list.

Belgium is also holding its General election this year. How long it will take to form a government is anyone's guess.

The worker's party of Belgium seem to be polling well, especially in Brussels.....(just noticed that devilwincarnate has already answered the question I was sort of asking..)

The Workers' Party of Belgium is one of the parties with which the RCPB(ML) has friendly relations. Its veteran leader Ludo Martens, who wrote a broadly sympathetic book on Stalin, died a few years ago.
Next-door in plucky Luxembourg, there ought to be a big lead in the opinion polls for the Prince Louis Appreciation Party, but there probably isn't.

Continuing to work downwards in number of seats, we come to Belgium. Ah, Belgium. In 2009 reduced from 24 seats to 22. They will lose a further one this year. To me it makes more sense to look at things separately in terms of the 3 electoral colleges as only the Workers Party stand across the different colleges. Dutch Speaking: CD&V | 23.3% | -4.9% | 3 seats | nc | EPP | Open VLD | 20.6% | -1.4% | 3 seats | nc | ALDE | VB | 15.9% | -7.3% | 2 seats | -1 | none | SPA | 13.2% | -4.6% | 2 seats | -1 | PES | N-VA | 9.9% | +9.9% | 1 seat | nc* | EGP-EFA | Groen! | 7.9% | -0.1% | 1 seat | nc | EGP | LDD | 7.3% | +7.3% | 1 seat | +1 | ECR |
* N-VA had run a joint list with CD&V in 2004 French Speaking: PS | 29.1% | -7.0% | 3 seats | -1 | PES | MR | 26.0% | -1.5% | 2 seats | -1 | ALDE | Ecolo | 22.9% | +13.0% | 2 seats | +1 | EGP | CDH | 13.3% | -1.8% | 1 seat | nc | EPP |
German Speaking: CSP | 32.3% | -10.2% | 1 seat | nc | EPP | PFF | 20.4% | -2.4% | 0 seats | nc | ALDE | Ecolo | 15.6% | +5.1% | 0 seats | nc | EGP | PS | 14.6% | -0.3% | 0 seats | nc | PES |

The CDH's Joelle Milquet is one of the most awful political characters there, and that's from the same region that produced the horrendous Guy Spitaels, and the revolting Michel Daerden.

Ructions in the PS, as the veteran MEP Veronique de Keyser has fallen out with them and been expelled, apparently over her being moved down the list.
There are also suggestions that the former international footballer Michel Renquin will stand for the reasonably unpopular Parti Populaire.

2009 Results Luxembourg: 6 seats: Christian Social People's Party (CSV) | 31.4% | -5.8% | 3 seats | nc | EPP | Socialist Workers Party (LSAP) | 19.5% | -2.5% | 1 seat | nc | S&D | Democratic Party (DP) | 18.7% | +3.7% | 1 seat | nc | ALDE | Greens (DG) | 16.8% | +1.8% | 1 seat | nc | EGP | Alternative Democratic REform (ADR) | 7.4% | -0.6% | 0 seats | nc | ECR |
So no significant changes last time and unlikely to be many this year, making Luxembourg possibly the most boring election in Europe this May.

Although it will be the first Euro election in a very long time that the Christian Democrats aren't in government at national level - is that likely to affect the results (anti-government protest voting?) With so few seats you'd need quite a big swing in their favour - probably putting over 40% and one of the others dropping below 10% for the seats to change. There has been no polling I can find since the GE last year, but I would have thought such a dramatic swing was unlikely. On paper, it would be much easier for the Socialists to claim one of the CSV seats, but as they are now in government that may be unlikely unless they are proving very popular. The other possible change, I would guess would be for ADR to overtake the Greens, but not sure how likely that is either.

Well, there could be a differrent result, since there is much more electors. 45% of the Luxembourg population is foreigners (and soon, it will be over 50%). And, for the first time, all foreigers will be able to vote (before, you had to be living in Luxembourg for 2 years before being able to vote in European elections.)
45% of foreigners probably explains why there is no polling, too (those would be polls for the general election, but it's an issue when every other polled person isn't a citizen).
If anything, PD is more likely to gain a seat than LSAP. 3-1-1-1 seems more likely than anything else, however.

So no significant changes last time and unlikely to be many this year, making Luxembourg possibly the most boring election in Europe this May. Greens and LSAP switched places, which is surprising, but seats are the same. 6 seats: Christian Social People's Party (CSV) | 37.3% | +6.3% | 3 seats
| nc | Greens (DG) | 15.0% | -1.8% | 1 seat
| nc
| Democratic Party (DP) | 14.8% | -3.9% | 1 seat
| nc
| Socialist Workers Party (LSAP) | 11.8% | -7.7%
| 1 seat
| nc | Alternative Democratic Reform (ADR) | 7.5% | +0.1%
| 0 seats
| nc | The Left (DL)
| 5.8%
| +2.4%
| 0 seats
| nc
| Pirate Party (PP)
| 4.2%
| +4.2%
| 0 seats

| nc
| Communist Party (KPL)
| 1.5%

PID is a wierd populist party, mostly talking about immigration and homeopathy.

German Speaking College: LDD, which had disastrous results at most recent elections decided to only contest the West Flanders (Dedecker's home province) province in the legislative election and give up on Europe, in order "to save the party". It didn't worked, they got 3.5% in West Flanders, not enough to get a seat in the Chamber. I think than they'll fade in irrelevence now.

The results for both the Belgian Federal Parliament and the Belgian European Elections correlate once again to linguistic lines. Not really surprising.

Unless I've gone blind, there is no Dutch thread, so I'll ask my question here. In the Euros, the CDA won 5 MEPs to the 4 of D66, but I thought the Dutch used a national list? How is this possible?
