The antique monk would suggest that - even if there were other issues - the weather probably contributed to the godawful turnout.

Great result for the Pirates in A&C, I know Loz was pushing even harder than his already well known efforts for doing so.

If they're not calling it "Liverpool Worst", they're trying too hard.

It must be likely that none of the three gains yesterday would have happened had the weather not been so awful - played havoc with the predictions

Ken Dobson, the Liberal candidate had been a councillor for the Beswick and Clayton ward a decade or so ago before he was a City Centre councillor.

Richard Lees, the Independent candidate in Dartford (Swanscombe), was the Swanscombe and Greenhithe Residents Association county councillor for Swanscombe and Greenhithe on Kent County Council from 2009 to 2013. He did not stand again for the county council this year. He was apparently deselected, for reasons I know not. Vic Openshaw is also a former councillor for the SGRA, who lost his borough seat in Greenhithe in 2011. Steve Doran is a previous mayoress of Dartford (IIRC she is Conservative councillor Dave Hammock's niece. Either way, she was mayoress when Dave was Mayor). I heard that the boss of the Residents group fell out with him a bit, it seems he doesn't like change or people with opinions other than his own! Several Residents Ass members want the boss to stand aside because he is out of touch, but RL was just a deselected casualty

Labour win Shettleston on a 17.55% turnout And I had a bet on the turnout here being lower than in Hamilton West & Earnock given the return of #HurricaneBawbag! But worth noting yet another election in Scotland where UKIP have not broken the 5% mark. Any thought that they might get a Euro seat next year holds no water with me until they start attracting at least 10% of the vote. And a small swing from Labour to the SNP but given the proliferation of minor candidates and the low poll, probably not of any significant note.

I think that Shettleston is not going to be high on UKIP's priority list for GOTV next May. Middle Class areas rather more so.

I think this storm is called Typhoon Trampoline, given the various places people's trampolines have ended up. This is even a worse result for the Greens than for UKIP (down from 4th in 2012 to 8th this time), so I guess Green talk of a Euro seat is leaky too.

You obviously can't derive the national picture from a single by-election. If you did that with the Coatbridge West by-election a while back then you'd be expecting Labour to win all 6 Scottish MEPs. I think the point is that UKIP aren't doing well anywhere in Scotland. The Greens do at least have some strongholds in the more urbane parts of Glasgow and Edinburgh.

UKIP has won the seat in Keighley, previously non-political territory, and came reasonably close behind Plaid Cymru in Penprysg in the South Wales heartlands.
Independent candidates in Porthcawl picked up four seats in the 2012 town council elections, in some cases by healthy margins, and hailed the results as a "Porthcawl spring". They have picked up two further seats in by-elections in West Central ward - one from Con in November 2012 and one from Lab this week. They are now the largest group on the town council. Sean Aspey, once a Lib Dem town councillor and now the Independent councillor for Porthcawl West Central on the Borough Council, is the Deputy Mayor.

The absence of a Plaid candidate in Splott is noted - does our own cibwr (or another Plaidster here) have any comment?
