For Labour MP's do they go for the most mischief making one like Dorries or someone like Amess who would be fairly neutral ? For Labour MPs to vote en masse for Dorries to make mischief would be to show a complete and utter contempt for parliament. I don't think there has been a serious suggestion that they will, unless I've missed something in the media?

I agree, but then the Tories attempt to stop Bercow could have been viewed in the same way. I simply don't know how any Labour MP could vote for Mad Nad to do anything other than eat grubs on television. Eleanor Laing would be my choice. Independent minded backbencher, not notably partisan Why? Most tories don't think Bercow is any good at his job. Nah. They're just narked because he clearly drifted away from believing in Tory values. And married a Labour wife He's proved to be a very pro-backbencher Speaker, and thats what the Speaker should be - a defender of Parliament, not Government

I don't think he has been awful, but he is rather petulant, sneery and self-righteous. Lindsey Hoyle would be better.
I would love to see Mad Nad as Chairwoman of the means and ways for a laugh.

The way he continued to sit on our backbenchers tutting at our frontbench for the sake of a soundbite was a bit OTT. Both of us believe in being sceptical of own's party, but he took it to another level and was just profoundly disloyal. If he just said, I don't agree with tory politics anymore - I am joining labour, then fair enough. Its the scheming we dislike. Besides, EM tried to convince Bercow to join labour in the 05-10 parliament, which Bercow declined. I simply don't trust the man, and he does not have my confidence.

Lindsay Hoyle might well succeed him. The next speaker will probably be Labour and he is well liked across the House

I think that's why he is a good speaker - because he is no longer strongly partisan

It would be a bad idea. And senior experienced Tories are likely to tell colleagues so. The Speaker Offices are not for playing games with. And IMPO voting for Dorries is not like when Labour got Bercow the job. He may in some view be a plonker or in mine a bit weak but she is a fool.

I think Bercow is great. He has changed parliament and by requiring the ministers to answer so many UQ's should be the job for him. If the next one is to be Hoyle or ANO then they have to simply piss off the governing party because they are then doing their job

There has been numerous complaints from our side that he has not been fair. You would not get any such complaints from either side with Mr Hoyle I am sure (and his accent is fantastic). The speaker should be respected by BOTH sides. Bercow isn't.

But to be fair most of the Conservative complaints about Bercow are manifestly ill-founded. Conservative MPs are more likely to transgress the rules of the House because they often need to, if they want to attack Labour policies in questions to Ministers. The Speaker was quite right to reprimand Simon Burns for turning round. The Speaker was quite right to help opposition MPs with the procedure when they wanted to object to a motion after the moment of interruption, and Patrick McLoughlin was quite wrong to complain about it.

Once nominations have closed at 5pm today, I might run our own poll on it.

Ladbrokes saying Henry Bellingham now 3/1 having been 16/1 earlier.

Nominations have closed and the candidates are the expected seven. Ladbrokes has put out a press release noting that the amount staked on Nadine Dorries (at nicely competitive odds of 33/1) is 50p.

And the winner is: Eleanor Laing. Beat Brian Binley 273 to 240 on the final stage.
551 votes cast, no spoilt ballot papers. Six stages in the count.
